I need to send my brother a bunch of fairly large files. We both have cable modems, but the files (even broken into smaller parts via RAR will fill up his mailbox far too fast. In the olden days, I could get a program like ZOC! to connect the two computers via Telnet. This doesn’t seem to work with a cable modem.
Is there some sort Telnet-type equivilant that works with Cablemodems connected to ethernet cards?
As an aside, the files I’m sharing are private, so a Napster equivialant that worked on zipped and rar’d files wouldn’t work unless there was some way to restrict access.
You could ‘share’ the folder the files are in and password protect the share. Then have your brother do a find computer and enter your IP in order to find your PC.
You would have to enable ‘File and Printer Sharing’ in your Network Settings. Right click Network Neighborhood, click properties, click File Printer Sharing, check the ‘I want to enable others to share my files’ box.
After rebooting right click the folder you want to share. I’m going off memory here now…there should be a ‘sharing’ option for you to select. You can set to read only or full access but make sure you set a password or anyone sniffing for open shares will scoop it.
You may want to unshare it after he has the files. This will also only work if you are on the same network. i.e. same ISP.
Alternatively you could temporarily set up an FTP server. Serv-U and Warftp were ones I used to use.
for giving a little marketing data you can go to http://login.myspace.com/nd_home.asp (or myspace.com) and sign up for 300 mb of net storage. You could upload them there and your bro can download - just give him your user name and password
if you do sign up for myspace.com and it give the opportunity to enter a refering person - add mine which is suprizingly enough k2dave so I can get some more space
Why don’t you open FTP services on a specific folder, and make it password-protected? Then, on the other box, just go to ftp://fenrisIPAddress/fenrissharedfoldername/ (entering password when requested) and select the files and download them?
Not being a PC user, I can’t recommend any specific steps to setting up FTP services, but I’m sure there are dozens of freebie (if not built-in Microsoft) methods at your disposal; if you are on a Mac, download the freeware NCSA Telnet, which lets you set up an FTP server (Edit:Preferences).
I too would go with ICQ, I have been able to transfer hefty files with blazing speed via cable to non cable equipped friends. The cable to cable speed is awesome.
if it was me and a buddy of mine, I would head over to Gene6 and get their FTP software, which you can use for free for a couple weeks. Have the other person get a FTP client, from either Bullet Proof FTP or Cute FTP (I prefer Bullet Proof immensly). Then, once you are both configured and running, he will have access to your harddrice, to the files that you specify. I always have an FTP online for people to access, and I server mp3s, anime, that kinda stuff. And I am a young’n, and I figured it out, so it can’t be that tough.
OK, here’s another easy solution: Set up NetBIOS resource sharing over Ethernet with share-level password required. Then you can browse each others’ computers via Network Neighborhood from directly within Open / Save / Save As dialog boxes.
(Or, if you’re using Macs, do the same for AppleShare).
You can also try Hotline which is pretty easy to setup and is a little more versatile with file queueing and resuming interrupted downloads than the FTP clients I’ve used (mostly WSFTP). OTOH, I guess if you set yourself up as an FTP server that programs like Getright and Net Vampire and whatnot would work as well. Well, one more option, anyway.
