How do I stop procras...prorc... Oh, forget it. I'll look it up later!

This week, I’m discovering exactly how many things I was lazy and procrastinated on since just prior to Christmas. One of these, my car insurance, I sent in on the 10th. Because it didn’t get sent on the 8th, it looks like it’ll cost me $60 more every 6 months.

I kicked in my line of credit last week, because I was too lazy to deposit the stupid check I’ve had since Christmas. But I have to go to the bank to do it, and I couldn’t be bothered. So whatever the interest rate times the 2 weeks of the line of credit will be the charge there.

I do this every winter. I hunker down, and don’t want to be bothered with things that are “hard” or inconvenient.

How do I break myself of this stupid habit?

Eli

Every winter? What about other seasons?

Is this a depression, seasonal-affective disorder thing?

I don’t think it’s a seasonal affective disorder (though it certainly could be).

It’s more like “It’s f****** cold outside. I don’t want to be out in that, so I’ll deal with it later.”

It’s a winter thing. As Spring comes to the frozen north, I get my energy back to do things

Or things reach a critical mass, and I HAVE to deal with them. I’m not sure which.

Eli

I’d guess it probably is. Either way, it won’t hurt for you to try taking vitamin D to see if you feel any better. Get it at GNC or a pharmacy.

Two things keep me from procrastinating (too badly):

  1. The feeling I get when I get stuff done.
  2. The feeling I get when I don’t get stuff done.

Nike got one thing completely right - just do it.

ETA: Forgot to say, I take my cod liver oil all the time (especially in winter). Us northern folks just don’t get enough sun in winter.

I thought I’d quickly look at Wikipedia’s entry on procrastination after reading this thread, it’s a good break from working, but XKCD-style I’ve looked at Student Syndrome, Post Office, Passports and now I’m looking at a boobs on bikes.

Not quite sure how I got there, but I’m pretty sure it was from avoiding my work. Stay away from wikipedia.

I’d suggest that when you put something off, don’t say to yourself, “I’ll do it later.” Say, instead, “I’ll do it Thursday, after work, when the bank is open later.”

Then stick to that plan. Make your postponements specific, not general. And keep the new dates you set.
