Like many, I have been getting groceries delivered to me. I use Amazon Fresh doorstep delivery which means the groceries are left at my doorstep and I do not see or talk to the driver.
I’ve searched the web-tubes and asked Amazon CS people but no dice. Nobody seems to know: How can I leave a tip for the drivers on the Amazon site? Anybody here using that service? Are you tipping? How?
I just got an email response from Amazon with instructions on how to tip. Here’s what they say:
I followed this as well as I could but there is no way to “Select that you want to edit your tip” because there is no tip to edit. This is a bit crazy and unfair to the delivery people who I want to tip.
First, you probably have been tipping those who deliver your order. The default option is to leave a tip (for approximately 10% of the total). The instructions from Amazon explain how to change the amount of the tip. However, the first instruction should state:
Open the order details in “Your Orders.”
The tip should appear in the Order Summary. As stated, you can change this amount within the first 24 hours after delivery. Hope this helps.
Thanks. I have reviewed the order many times. There is no tip listed in the charges. Here is all that are listed in the order summary:
Items subtotal (18): $49.72
Delivery charge: $0.00
Total before tax: $49.72
Est. Tax: $0.00
Items total: $49.72
Gift card amount: -$49.72
Grand total: $0.00
Have you received stuff delivered from Amazon Fresh? If so, are you willing to cut and paste where the tip was indicated on your order?
ETA: yes, the instructions from them weren’t that spiffy. You have to open order details first in order to see the order summary (which is was I posted above)
Incidently, Amazon has repeatedly overcharged me for the California bottle deposit, the SF sugared beverage tax, and sales tax. I complained several times. Each time they are totally confused about it (which makes some sense if they’re in India or whatnot).
They just tell me flat-out, “My info shows that $ x.xx is for bottle deposit fees.” So I ask, “How much are you charging me per bottle, because it should be 10 cents a piece for 2 liter Cokes, I ordered three, but you charged me $1.60 (say) instead of 30 cents.”
They can’t tell me the per bottle rate, just the total, which is wrong. this pisses me off. Not the money so much, just that they’re jerking me around. So I get sent to a “higher-level” customer service person who just makes groveling, apologetic noises and gives me a $5 credit but doesn’t explain the “whys” or do anything about the ongoing issue.
Maybe THIS is what they consider their “tip” except it never goes to the driver, I’m sure, and it’s not transparent at all.
Yes, I frequently order from Amazon Fresh. Here’s what I see:
Order Summary
Item(s) Subtotal: $88.19
Fresh delivery charge: $9.99
Prime Benefit: -$9.99
Total before tax: $88.19
Estimated tax to be collected: $0.00 Tip (optional): $9.00
Grand Total: $97.19
(Bolding added.)
This is what displays in Firefox on my PC. I checked the Amazon app on my iPhone and also see the tip displayed there.
Interesting. I used Chrome but I can’t see that making a difference about this. I have never even seen the word “tip” appear anywhere on my orders, receipt, or anything. I wonder if the fact that I use their “Doorstep Delivery” matters. If anything, I would think getting DD would make a tip option MORE likely, not less because with DD you never see, hear, or talk to, the delivery person and thus, do not have an opportunity to tip them in person as you would with their face-to-face delivery.
I’d think Amazon would be trying to encourage people to tip their drivers during the Covid pandemic. I know I certainly wouldn’t normally go out of my way to tip but these aren’t normal times.
And it’s frustrating that I’ve asked Amazon about this twice now and not gotten the answer.
Hey dude (dudette) thanks a lot! That’s the answer, I think. I sort of understand Amazon not allowing tips from gift cards because one could use it in collaboration with a delivery person to convert a gift card to cash which I guess is a big no-no. BUT, they could still have a way for me to tip and just inform me that I have to tip from my credit card which I would be happy to do.
Nobody I talked to at Amazon knew this, apparently. It really sucks because now I have no way to tip today’s driver. At least I will know what to do differently in the future. Thanks very much.
Mods, you can close this thread. I gots me an answer.
Amazon Fresh drivers do not receive tips. We have used Amazon Fresh for over two years now. There has never been a way to tip the drivers. They are all paid by Amazon.
Nope. I have delivered for Amazon Fresh. We get tips. The people who work for the store putting the orders together don’t get tipped, the “shoppers,” or whatever, but the drivers do get tipped. I guess because we don’t get reimbursed for gas.
Honestly, we get paid fairly well for part-time work. AFTER I subtract what I pay for gas, and BEFORE I add in tips, I make about $13/hr. People are tipping generously, and I end up making close to $20 and hour when i deliver for Amazon Fresh.
I know this doesn’t include wear & tear on my car, but I’m using an 18-year-old car that was purchased for mega-cheap, in spite of the fact that it was in terrific condition, and had less than 100,000 miles on it (it’s a manual, and previous owner was leaving the country and desperate to sell it, with no takers at all over 4 months of trying). Plus, barely driving the car at all otherwise right now.
I just started doing this when I got furloughed from my regular job, and will probably stop once i go back, but it’s helping a lot right now.
