How Do I Track Down a Long-Dead Relative?

My mother is getting on in years and she has always wondered what happened to her uncle, who disaapeared from her life when she was very young. This man served in the US Navy, as an enlisted man from 1918-1920, and then as an officer (ensign) from 1920-1924. His last known address was a Veteran’s Home in Chicago-this was in 1929! I was able (with the helpof my local congreesman) to get hold of his Navy recors, , but how do I find out what happened to him after 1929? He had no contact with his family since the 1920’s, and my late grandfather always regretted not knowing the fate of his brother.
The man was born in 1895, so I doubt very much that he is still alive…anybody know how I can conduct a web-based search for this man?
Thanks !

Try the Social Security Death Index as a start. 1929 is before SS, but there’s a chance he might be listed there.

Ancestry.com is another good search site.
