How do I turn on Java in IE7 ?

I’m trying to use the NY Times “Classic Puzzle from The New York Times Archive”

It keeps telling me “Your web browser does not support Java applets or Java is not enabled in web browser preferences.”

There is no IE7 browser Help entry for Java or Applet.

Searching, all the advice says go to your Internet Options, Security, Custom Level, and select Java.

But there is no Java listed there or anywhere else in my Internet Options.

You probably need to download java. here is their website where you can download it for free.

Start by going to www.sun.com and downloading the latest Java Runtime Environment for your IE.

Beat ya by three minutes. Neener Neener Neener.

Yeah, but my link goes directly to the appropriate download. :stuck_out_tongue:

It took many tries, but I finally got it.
I don’t know why they have to fight you at every turn.

First they wouldn’t let me install because “you are already installed”

So I uninstalled.

Then they wouldn’t let me install because " bin\ktab.exe: Old file not found. However, a file of the same name was found. No update done since file contents do not match."

What on earth does that signify? Of course the name is the same but the contents don’t don’t match - that is what “update” means!

So I went in and manually deleted that file.
And the next one they choked on.
And the next.

I hope Java gets obsoleted soon, but I’m afraid of what will replace it

Ok, and thanks for the links! Now I can do the puzzle

A lot of times when I see Java plugin problems it’s because, for some reason, Jave doesn’t update old versions with new. Instead it adds another version. Last time I had to troubleshoot Java on someone’s machine I found like 4 copies of it (all different version numbers) in add/remove programs. Removing all of the versions and installing the latest version from Sun did the trick.
