I’ve watched shows like “The Jeffersons,” “The Brady Bunch,” “Hazel” and they all have live in maids.
Now on these shows the live in maid, seems always to be on duty.
How does this work in real life? I mean I work 8 hours, salary.
Does the maid get a salary or wages. Is she paid overtime?
Like on the “Brady Bunch,” Alice must be on the job before 7am and at night she’s stilll working.
It’d be different for every household.
I bet most get chunks of time to themselves every day, with the occasional emergency call.
Alice probably worked from 6:30-9, then from 11:30-2, then from 5:30-8, or something like that, with the in-between times being her own. Remember, she had time to date the Sam the Butcher. 
She probably had to do once-a-week things too, like shopping, mopping, vaccuming, certain laundry loads, etc. those might get done between her split shifts on certain days.
