How do people wind up doing porn?

Out of curiosity, how does a porn star typically get to be a porn star? Do they usually start out as hookers or strippers and a budding porn producer approaches them? Are there newspaper ads looking for porn actors they respond to? Do they usually go looking for work as a porn actress or actor, or does the director usually come to them asking if they are interested? Is is hard luck actors or actresses, people desperately needing money, raging exhibitionism… what?

How does the whole thing usually work for a person to get looped into being a porn actor or actress?

I was in a Las Vegas strip club a few years ago. My friend recognized a major male porn star/producer in the crowd. He was chatting up the strippers and handing out business cards.

It was my understanding that Ginger Lynn got into it by way of a modeling/acting agency that did porn recruiting on the side.

She started out as a model. Then a nude model. Then gradually began doing porn films.

Guesses:
The universal search for a “job you love.”
“Everyone at work says I really suck. Maybe I should switch careers.”
Young women cashing in on a talent for faking orgasms.
Men who have been fired for groping, and smacking the asses of, co-workers.

This is the sort of list where you just don’t do “that thing with the third item.”

A lot of strippers do one or two pornos and then go back to stripping and bill themselves as “porn stars,” and supposedly can make even more tips. If one winds up making enough movies, she can go on tours of the clubs as a top billed act.

A lot of the pro-am and gonzo producers operate on very low budgets, and they just chat up and hand out cards to EVERY girl they meet. They get plenty of “talent” for their “movies.”

A very small proportion may have freinds or family in the biz and decide that it’s a good way to make money, too.

As for male talent, the turnover in male talent for hetero porn is amazingly small, compared to the females. It’s not easy to perform in front of a crowd of crewpeople, with partners you may not find attractive, and with the director barking orders about the unnatural contorted positions he wants, about how your hands are in the way, or that he wants an ejaculation on demand, although I suppose that Viagra makes a lot of that a bit easier.

Some male talent has come over from the gay porn side, where new males are more frequently recruited from the stripper and model ranks similar to how females are. Others come from the crew side, or have been recruited by producers or big name female stars because of their… ahem… endowments. I’m sure that this side of the biz has more of a proportion of folks who seek out the industry as a career, even though men get paid even less than the women.

“Hi, I’m John Waddy,” [zip, schlunk] “and I wanna make movies.”

Really, though, the number of new male, ahem, faces in mainstream porn is amazingly small… just a few a year. Some of them have been doing it for 20 years or more…

I think it’s a case of being sucked into the industry as opposed to actively seeking to become a porn start, although I saw a documentary on UK TV about a girl who went to America to be in porn movies because she wanted to embarrass her father. I think a lot of girls end up doing porn because they thought they were getting into the movie industry

Hard work and perseverance? Finally obtaining the lifelong dream? Or maybe just drugs?

I’ve met two porn stars in my life. I never asked either one why/how/when/what/where/who… it’s their life. The male porn star grabbed my ass though when we posed for a picture. Funny because he likes butts, he did the Anabolic series of films (Mark- the English dude) which is mainly anal. Weird huh?

Guess who tore that up? Jealous ex-hubby… yeah, gonna leave you for a paid man slut, oh yeah. Funny to think I left ya because you’re the devil incarnate instead.

I saw two ads in the classifieds today (in the Vancouver Sun) asking for people to apply for roles at adult movie companies.

I used to live in West Hollywood, California. Gay center of the world.
Everyone seemed to be a porn “star” (seems there are no such thing as porn extras).

Most guys actively searched out the opportunity.

Pays fairly well. Jeff Stryker will never have to “work” again.
You get recognized in the bars and score easily.
No one cares. I met Gay porn “stars” who worked by day at the film studios, and everybody knew they were in the films.
These guys go to the gym six days a week, twice a day.

“When I get old, I can always look back and see what I looked like then.”

Danny Summers (one of my favorites, total bottom) did porn through the 90s, and is now retired and using his earnings to put himself through medical school. Just a little tidbit.

When jeremy evil worked at the South Beach gay bars, he did VIP for gay porn stars who’d come by on “tour,” do a quick little show, sign some autographs, then go on their merry way. Jer says that as a rule they were more than gracious and very polite, with the exception of one (either Jeff Stryker or Ryan Idol - I forget), who went out in front of the crowd and said something to the effect of, “Look, I’m straight. I just do this because you faggots eat it up.” And the crowd goes wild… “Booooo!”

I don’t know, even if you can get past the moral quandry of it, the money would be hard to pass up.

But, for me, it’s like anything else, I love to cook and I’ve actually thought of going to a culinary school but then did a reality check. Would I enjoy cooking under the gun for other people during the hours that people eat?

You know, once something becomes a job, do you give a rats ass about it when you get home?

Well, it’s like this. You’re a gorgeous blonde whose main asset in life is your gorgeousness, just turned 18. You can work at the mall or at burger doodle for peanuts and hope to meet a nice guy, or you can work at the local strip club, or even a distant strip club, for beaucoups of bucks. What do you do? What DO you do?

If I had to guess I’d say Jeff Stryker. I met Ryan Idol at a performance and he was unfailingly polite. Of course that might have had something to do with the press pass I was wearing.

I tried to post this last night but got a “connection failure.” My ex-pornstar/escort friend got into the business because he was born poor, ran away at age 15 into a disastrous marriage and had a hot body with a large penis. I don’t know how typical his story is. He has since retired from both the porn and the escort business and has a long-term partner and two adopted children. I haven’t heard from him actually for a while so I’m sort of worried about him…

I used to dance with a girl who now goes by Annie Andersin. She started out the geeky stripper that no one liked, but a couple years later and a lot of plastic surgery later she decided to become a porn star. It really was her dream. She’s a very odd girl. Google her and you’ll see what I mean.
