While glancing at some of the sleazier sites available on the web, it occurred to me that there are thousands upon thousands of people in the porno business. Where do they find so many folks willing to degrade themselves? Do smut producers go out and actively recruit? Every woman I’ve ever known is horrified by porn. How do they get so many young, pretty women to do this?
What makes you think that the rest of the world is exactly like your small circle of friends?
And I bet a good money offer would change the mind of some women who said they’d never do it. What you call degradation is very subjective and many people would disagree with you. I am one of those.
I find it degrading when people are forced to do what they do not want to do or when they are prevented from doing what they want to do. If a woman wants to pose for X dollars I would think she should be free to do so just as much as she should not be forced to do it against her will.
I am a libertarian after all. Adult porn is and should be legal. I can find it degrading without wanting to ban it, can’t I? (I’m not so disgusted that I won’t take a peek every once in a while;) ) I’m still suprized that so many woman are willing to do it. I can see men wanting to, though:)
But back to my question: Do they recruit, or do those gals go looking for work in adult movies? If they recruit, how? Where? I remember recruiters from business, the military, even the C.I.A. showing up where I went to college, but no porn recruiters. What’s the dope?
there’s a whole school for them. check out this thread, mang.
Even if there were, say, 100,000 performers in the porn industry in the US, that’s only about 0.04% of the population (4 out of 10,000).
If you’ve ever seen a gathering of 10,000 people, it’s not hard to imagine that only 4 of them are the porn actor/actress type.
Slight aside: I used to attend some killer parties at this one guys house (I’ll call him Bob). At some of the later parties, Bob played a rather disgusting porno movie that looked amateurish. He also started doing nude photo shoots in one of the bedrooms.
Just before I got married, I ran into Bob at a bar. He invited my fiancee and me to an upcoming party. Well, we couldn’t make it. But I do remember his girlfriend that was sitting at his table…
She and Bob now have an amatuer porno website, with pictures of her doing a lot of things with strangers, in public and private. Bob is also in some of the pictures.
So, depending on whether you consider them pros (they do have a subscription plan on their website), I know porno performers.
From pkbites:
Just doing some research there pk?
I think you must hang out with the wrong women.
No, but seriously…almost every woman I know finds porn to be, at worst, a mild irritant and at best a huge turn-on. A female friend of mine used to work at a porn shop.
Perhaps they thought you thought they should think it was horrible, and reacted appropriately? I mean, did you ask them, “What do you think of porn,” or “Wow, isn’t porn vile and disgusting?” Leading the witness. Heh.
Doesn’t anyone remember Serlinel’s I was a porn shop employee opus, which was amazingly hijacked by Arnold Winkelried’s I was a Christian bookstore employee?
Most women I know have either been intrigued or actively interested in porn. I’ve only found one that was actively uninterested in it, but even she wasn’t offended – it just didn’t do anything for her.
I’ve met porn-type people in bars before. They’re normal people, really. Very nice, too. They use aliases on their sites, but when they’re off-line, they have normal names like Bob, Jane, and Joe.
My wife once wanted to rent a porno video to “set the mood” one evening. (She’d seen my small collection of videos, which were excerpts from longer films, and wasn’t impressed.)
She was rather disguested by most of the titles, but then found a section with “romantic” looking cover boxes. We rented it and popped it into the bedroom VCR.
She was not impressed.
It was just more of the same type of scenes from my videos. I guess she was looking for an NC-17 version of “Gone with the Wind”.
There are about 10,000 people signed up for this message board, so that means… there are 3 more
Alright! Who’s up for it???
A.
I’m pretty sure we have one regular on this board who runs a rather large (and cool, if I recall correctly) porn site.
First…for the reader poll…my wife really enjoys porn but is otherwise a bit conservative in most ‘normal’ aspects of life.
Second, is it really that hard to understand why a woman would want to get into pornography? Pornographers do occasionally recruit through searches for ‘nude models’ and other things you will see in second-rate newspaper classifieds. But look at it this way…surely you would agree that all big cities have prostitution. And, at least on the higher end, many of these prostitutes are likely young and attractive that got into the business for whatever reason. Now consider that in their profession, they have very little say over who they have sex with and they have to have sex with, say, 50 men to make ‘X’ amount of money.
Now, take that same woman and offer her a deal where she gets to have sex with only 3 men in front of a camera (and probably better looking men than her typical clients!) and she still makes the same ‘X’ amount of money. Plus, I would be willing to bet that porn actors are prescreened for AIDS, Hepatitis, etc., whereas again, the typical client of a prostitute is not.
As a stupid side note:
When I was young lad, we used to frequent a strip bar in Los Angeles where the star stripper ‘Belladonna’ left to become a porn star. She didn’t make it very far, but you can bet every guy that was a regular went out and rented her movies as part of her…errr…‘fan club’.
Of my graduating class of 150 or so, there were 4 girls who became topless dancers after graduation. 2 of them went on to porno film careers. So it is not hard to imagine 4 out of 10,000.
I am not ashamed to admit that I like strip clubs! Yes I do! The pool tables are the cheapest in town and drink specials on Wednesday are fantastic. Yup, beer and pool.
Damnit… I forgot what I was talking about…
Believe it or not pk some girls actually want to be in porn. I know a girl (whom I’ll call twisted-sick-ex-lover-who-is-now-an-unwed-mother-of-five) who honestly loved having sex and being naked, and had always wanted to get into porn. So she moved away to Los Angeles to do so. Of course, I don’t know if she made it or not.
Either way, it made sense to me, I’m good at computers and music, so that’s what I got into. It stands to reason that people who like having sex (more than your average Mr. Sheepshead) would go into that business.
Oh yeah, and she wasn’t my girlfriend, she has no kids, and for all I know she’s married now. But she was kinda twisted.
My insanely gorgeous former girlfriend (who was also simply insane, but not for the about to be discussed reasons) was all about sex all of the time. However, she didn’t particularly like your run-of-the-mill porno films. She felt they could be done much, much better.
She proposed that we make and market our own film, to “show them how the hell it’s done,” as she succinctly put it. After much soulsearching and agonizing over the possible consequences, I submitted when she completed the sentence. I went out and got a camera and some props that day, and devoted the rest of a long weekend to, um, “acting.”
It was a wonderful little film, involving a cape, some fake teeth, Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du printemps and enough fake blood to account for my entire security deposit. She was all about having our friends over to watch our little opus. I… was a wuss. Plus, as much as many of my guy pals wanted to see my girlfriend naked (and many, I suspect, eventually did), none wanted to see me naked, I am sure. When we finally broke up, a long time later, we destroyed the tapes.
Well, most of them. I made a copy, purely for posterity of course. The fact that she was crazy, from a political family, and litigious beyond comprehension didn’t factor in at all, nope. Later, when good sense and that tattered, wispy rag of a conscience got the better of me, I destroyed it, too. Only a few days later, when the bitch started suing my friends, I was crawling around in the dumpster trying to find it again so I could start my own Internet porno operation–with her as the sole star. Alas, trash day had come and gone.
But that doesn’t mean she didn’t make a copy, too. I suspect that a lot of the footage you discover on the Internet is of this nature, either of the “hey, we’re pretty good at this and you oughta see it” type like the little woman was, or of the “I’m a vengeful bastard and I’m going to make you pay” variety to which I must admit. Either way, most of it I think is created all in good fun, with a secondary prospect of some profit. How much of it is created with public consumption in mind, I just don’t know.
