How do PODS trailers work?

You know those PODS you can rent for storage? I’ve seen some left in front of a residence for ease of packing & moving, I am sure, but… How do they load and unload the PODS from the back of a tractor trailer? Can a POD be loaded and unlaoded by forklift? mag-lev? …or what?

Thats all well and good in front of the customer however, I have a good buddy who upon arrival, his pod was in such disarray he lost quite a few breakables. The POD company answer to this: We only pick up and drop off, the packing is up to you… And good luck trying to prove you packed a perfect pod.

How is that PODS patented lift system (i.e.: frame) powered? It is unclear in the promotional video shown at the link provided.

No different from movers, though. My moving company wouldn’t insure anything they didn’t pack into boxes themselves. Since I didn’t want to pay $100 an hour to have my stuff packed, I packed it, they put it on the truck, but it still wasn’t guaranteed to get there in one piece.

(After I saw the way they move, though, next time I’m letting them pack too. Those guys are FAST!)

Seconded. If your time is worth $10-15/hour you will be money ahead to pay the $100/hr. expert packers, and as you said, you then have recourse for breakage.

The only time I did this is when my first employer paid for the move. I was moving out of my parent’s house, and had to tell them what stayed, and what to pack. I was all I and my parents could do to keep two of them busy. They had the truck loaded with a 1 bedroom apartment worth of stuff in maybe 45 minutes at the most.

I assume that they don’t want to rely on the customer having a 110V outlet nearby, so I assume that they use 12V electric motors. The whole thing looks like a modified four post lift.

I saw one operating near me, and it looked to be internally powered, possibly from the truck engine. (There were no power cables running around.) I suspect most of the value added is the concept and the loader.

You can partially pack yourself, and hire movers for the heavy stuff, and optimize that way. I have lots of books, and movers love them, since they’re heavy, easy to pack, and can’t be damaged unless the van breaks open or something.

I rented a PODs (or the same thing by another name) to move stuff into while I remodeled last year.
They take it on and off the truck with a fork lift. One very similar to this one
