I always wonder how, although filmed live in New York, the Today Show always gets my time right. Like where they say, “It’s 7:08, now here’s Matt.” I’m in Central time, so why don’t they say “It’s 8:08, …”? Then, while vacationing in Arizona, they did the same thing. It was the same people and everything, but they got the time right. So, how do they say the right times for each time zone? Do they keep the anchors on hand for each broadcast so they can edit out the original and put in the appropriate time, or do they film the show 4 times a day?
Maybe they say it 3 or 4 times, once for each zone, and edit the other part out.
I’m not familiar with the Today Show in the Central Time Zone, so I checked on the web and found what I suspected: it’s on there from 7am to 9am.
It’s on here, in NYC also from 7am to 9am.
So the answer is that you don’t get it live – or at least the parts that come from NYC. Stations in the CTZ must tape it and air it exactly 1 hour later so it matches their local time.
You are exactly correct. Tomorrow ( well, in 16 minutes I go to work, setting up, but…) I work on “Good Morning, America” for ABC. The show is done live, once. Notice they don’t say, “It’s 7:15am here in the East Coast”- they just say what time it is. The show is tape delayed.
I’ve got a good friend who does the outside crane work on the “Today” show- he says the same deal applies. They simply don’t have to time to wait around later in the morning, for customized segments for each time zone. Now, when I’ve done ABC Sports shows, on rare days, we have actually taped segments for West Coast airing only, but that is usually because of a College Football game specific to a time-zone’s audience. Hence, that attention to detailed segments.
Always glad to help. Wake up by 8:00 am EST, and watch the B-52's tomorrow :D
Cartooniverse.
P.S.- I’ll be the one up close to the stage, trying to stay out of everyone else’s shot…
Pay attention to the next time there’s a big, breaking story that requires frequent updates. The morning shows will run the live feed to all time zones and you’ll hear plenty of Eastern time references.
On a related question: Way back in the old days, the 8 am (eastern) hour of Today was live in Chicago (7 am CT). The 7-am (ET) hour was delayed 2 hours and was shown at 8:am CT. When did they change this practice and delay the whole show 1 hour?
