Hmmm. I’m entirely open to ideas, so this’s just a suggestion, but I for one think that a comedic component definitely wouldn’t be unwelcome. (Rev, feel free to chime in if there’s a specific style you would really like, or really prefer not to work with!)
Anyway, when I think “Rock + Comedy” my brain automatically supplies “Heavy Metal,” so I think it might be funny to play in the late 70s or early 80s.
As for tone, I’m kind of stuck. I don’t think anything too dark or too idealistic would work well with our characters as we’ve written them, but I could see a balance turning out really well, especially considering the wide range of motivations our characters are bringing to a single party.
Hrm. I’m not sure I want to go too humorous on this one. Just my two cents.
I suspect Powerhouse was just a session player that hooked up with the band after their keyboardist (and do you -have- keyboardists in metal? I’m really not sure) had to be replaced last-minute.
Heehee, it works for me. So, let’s see… we all answer adds or somehow end up in a pickup group, and that gives us a decent place to start. Does anyone else have any feelings on time or feel, though? I’m up for just about anything, but I’m not sure I could convincingly play a 4-color character. Does anyone object to my being Batman to our JLA?
ED: By which, of course, I mean play a “Goes against the grain, but hangs around because he sees everyone else is doing good” sort. Not literally batman.
I’m still following the thread with interest, and wanted to offer up an observation: The odds of three (or more) superheroes randomly answering ads to join the same band are pretty low, even in a fairly meta-rich setting. What are the chances that someone is pulling strings to get the characters together?
Since each character presumably has a secret identity, do you each know that the others are superheroes at the outset? Each character trying to hide his secret from the other members of the band could make for quite a bit of chaos, not to mention any sound crew or roadies you might have.
Hmm, those are both good points. I kind of liked the idea of the heroes getting haphazardly thrown together at the lost moment, but I’d definitely be up for some kind of secret manipulation plot.
With regards to your second part, I’d be happy to be the bassist, but nobody wants to be the bassist: he’s the one that the band trades for a better microphone.
Don’t look at me, man. “What do you call a guy who hangs around with musicians?” “The drummer.”
We don’t have a lead, either. This could be important, possibly useful, and maybe a NPC. Actually, I see potential for a lot of comedy here, in a vaugely self-aware way. “THE GOD OF HELL-FIRE HAS THE MUNCHIES.”
Hmm, that’s a good point. We could always hire a series of self-destructive types who conveniently burn out if and when we find a cooler NPC to recruit.
But yea, if we’re gonna draft NPCs I’d just as soon play lead guitar: somehow the image of an apathetic French guy trying to convincingly thrash out to his umpteenth performance of “Bang A Nun” makes me giggle.
I actually thought it’d be funny to give his guitar a point or two of Hellfire Control for stage effects, but I decided that was more E-Sabbath’s area. ^^
From the idea i’d be assuming a Pl of 10, just for ease more than any IC reason. If anyone would prefer something else, now would be a time to say it.
I’ve hashed out a few ideas; I think i’ve got some good ones that add in a sprinkle of some of your thoughts so far. I’ve fleshed out a starting point from a “You meet in a bar to answer the call for forming a band”, because it’s good to get the mandatory cliche out of the way first. But i’m alright coming up wth some other starts. As it is I believe I have some plot ideas I can mesh in and specify once you’ve sorted out ideas and characters for certain.
Hmm, PL 10 and any starting point you come up with sound good to me. I think I’ve finished my character history and PMed it to you, so as soon as you approve it I’ll post it here.
All right, I believe our illustrious GM has my basic background for Powerhouse, but I’ll be sending character sheet and more detailed BG probably in another day or so- I need to retrieve my Mutants and Masterminds rulebook from a friend’s house.
Alright, I’m not sure whether the game’ll go this long, but I just confirmed today that I’ll be unavailable for most of the month of July, if that has an effect on scheduling.
