I have a USB fllash drive that I find quite valuable. The problem is, its value is greatest when it is with me all the time – because you never know when you’ll have to grab some data. In order to make sure I have it on me at all times, I simply clip it onto my key ring, which is something else that I have learned by force of habit over the last 30 years to always have on my person. There are 2 downsides to this approach. First, I sometimes make it out to the parking lot, or come upon a locked door in my building, only to realize that my keys are still plugged into my computer. Secondly, and more annoying, since my pocket is apparently a fairly harsh environment, my flash drives have an average life expectancy of just under a year. I back them up regularly, so I rarely lose data, and my office buys them, so I’m not out any money, and since I get a new one roughly every year I keep getting more and more storage for the same price. What do all of you other flash drive users do?
Mine hangs on a lanyard around my neck, along with my ID and key card.
My husband clips his to his name badge. He only uses it at work. Its on a snap clip, so it can be moved to his key chain, his watch chain, or a belt loop.
me too
I mentioned it in another thread but this seems like the perfect solution.
The USB Flash Drive folds away in classic swiss army fashion protecting it from shock and elements, it also comes with other swiss army tools optional. Seems fairly affordable as well.
I have one of these. It lives on my keychain. I’ve had it for about 1.5 years and it’s still working well, it’s never even been scratched.
I carry mine in my purse. I guess that’s not an option for you.
Keep your keyring on a hook by or on your front door so that you can’t miss it when you leave the house. When you need to use your flash drive, unhook it from the keyring and leave the keys hanging. Picking up your keys at the door in order to leave should remind you to run back to the computer and grab your flash. If not, put a little sign on the door reading ‘Do you have your flash drive?’
Do you carry a wallet? If you don’t go with one of the sturdy models recommended here, could you tuck your flash into your wallet?
Same here, it’s the only way to go. You always know where it is, plus earning major geek points.
On my keychain and I take it off when I connnect it to the computer, but I have a keychain that makes this pretty simple.
I’ve got this watch with the built in flash drive. I like it because it’s the new calculator watch of geekdom.
I don’t go anywhere without my Man-Purse, also known as a fanny pouch. My USB memory stick lives in there, tucked into the compartment used for that, spare Sony Memory Stick, PDA and Cel Phone. There’s a system to it, by gum.

I was teasing my boyfriend about how I would probably break his little plastic USB Flash Drive and so for Christmas he got me one of these
It can take 2000lbs of pressure before breaking.
However it lives on a lanyard or in my purse.
The question of course isn’t if it can take 2,000 lbs of pressure. The question is always, what happens when even the Titanium Cruzer takes a sharp rap along its case?
Squeeze is one thing. Sharp impact is another. You wanna damage something absolutely rigid? Whack it against a desk- just like people do every day when they wear their USB sticks on a lanyard around their neck. That always unnerves me- the potential for data loss or damage is larger if you are in a position to bang the stick, so to speak. -cough-
I, too, have the Swiss Army USB Knife. Stays on the keychain, unless I’m at work, when it’s plugged in, running GAIM and Firefox.
I keep mine in an inside pocket of my backpack.
Another one who keeps it on his key chain.
I don’t use it all that often – which means that if I don’t have it at all times, it won’t be there when I need it! So on the keychain it goes.
Damage has not been a problem to date… previous ones have outlived their usefuleness – 64M (working) stick, replaced by 128M, replaced by current 256M which will probably be going the way of all outdated technology by year’s end…
Normally, it’s in my messenger bag. If I know in advance I’m going to use it a lot on a particular day, I’ll wear a jacket with pockets or make some other wardrobe adjustment. You’ll never, ever, ever, ever catch me wearing it (or anthing else, for that fact of the matter) on a lanyard around my neck.
Mine’s on my keychain. I only use it to back up my compositions and for saving my work in my music technology class so I can work on it back here.
Another here who keeps it in the messenger bag. I usually “lose” it once a week prompting some huge freakout, but it always ends up in some crevice in the bag.
My husband keeps his in his wallet. It’s the kind that fits in a credit card-sized plastic sleeve, and it’s about as thin as a quarter.
