How do you do a background check--on yourself?

This thread is similar to a question I’ve been wanting to ask: What is the best way to do a background check–on yourself?

Credit reporting agencies are notorious for errors, sometimes egregious ones. I’ve corrected several from mine and have heard genuine horror stories from others (unrelated to identity theft). I have little doubt that similar errors surface during background checks.

Who, or what agencies, conduct these types of checks? How is the data collected? What do these reports consist of? Say a potential employer requests a check on a new hire–who actually does the researching, and how is accuracy determined? I’ve never had one done on myself, but I’d certainly like to know if my name or data has been the subject of clerical or transcription errors. Thanks in advance for any insight here, folks.

There is a bunch of ways that people do it but they tend to use similar methods and the web is making it easier.

Zabasearch is a portal for background checks. It will hook you up with your Intelius system data in a few minutes if you want for a fee. Maybe we should all make a list and then buy one of their 24 hour passes to do unlimited background checks on ourselves, friends, loved ones, and enemies. Sounds like a hoot.

Anyone with a credit card who is willing to part with $10 can view the criminal history of an individual in PA. We check every person making application to the fire company that way.

Or perhaps, select from one of background checking places found in the Google ads at the bottom of this thread.
