Someone was banned not too long ago for threatening to hack the boards. They didn’t make the threat on these boards, but someone saw the threat and reported it to the mods.
Some posters have been briefly banned for registering a second screen name, then unbanned after they contacted the mods and asked to have one of the names removed. One screen name per poster; otherwise, the second name will be presumed a sock.
There are rules besides “Don’t be a jerk”.
—Don’t make death threats. Not against another poster, not against anyone.
—Don’t post copyrighted material in its entirety.
—Don’t post suggestions on how to break or circumvent the law.
—If you’re not a mod, don’t issue warnings to other posters.
—Don’t do anything that might make the Chicago Reader vulnerable to a lawsuit. Example: Someone once posted a rant about the service they got in a store, and included the text of the letter they were going to send to the corporate offices. The letter said, in part, something to the effect of “…and I’m posting this on the Straight Dope Message Boards, so the whole world will know how awful you people are!” I forget if the poster was banned or not, but this was regarded as highly uncool. This person’s (IMO, petty and unsubstantiated) beef with the store was not the SDMB or the Chicago Reader’s concern, and the CR did not wish to be dragged into it.
—Don’t spam.
—If you have a problem with people on another board or in a newsgroup, don’t bring it here.
—Be careful when posting links to stuff other people might find objectionable. goatsex.cxe or whatever it is is specifically excluded. If something’s kinda bad (like erotic images that some might call pornographic, or even just nudity), warn people that it’s not “work-safe”. If it’s really bad (straight-up porn, sound links with a lot of obscenity, anything from rotten.com), well, maybe you don’t have to post it. But if there’s some reason why it’s relevant, then the “two clicks” rule applies: you link to a site, within which is another link to the hardcore image or sound. Also, don’t fool around with those sites that show an innocuous picture and thirty seconds later a screaming face jumps up.
I’m not sure which of these would be grounds for an immediate banning and which would merely get a warning. But if you get a warning, then whatever you got warned about, knock it off. People have been banned for stuff that’s not against a specific rule, but that they kept doing after being told, repeatedly, that enough was enough.
Thank you all. You’ve been very helpful and fitfully amusing. So, to sum up; behave like a grown-up of reasonable intelligence, post appropriately and don’t test the mods’ patience.

You can also get “banned” for asking to have your posting privledges removed (i.e. Lib). If this is indeed voluntary, it doesn’t take much more than an email to get back.
And if, by chance, you get banned, groveling may get you reinstated if your offence wasn’t eggregious. Email a mod.

Even if they’re attractive, why virgins, with all the awkwardness that implies? Wouldn’t it be better to have chocolate covered women-with-enough-sexual-experience-to-know-what-they’re-doing-but-not-enough-to-be-skanky?

Well, there can certainly be the “I’ve never really done this before” thrill with virgins that makes up for a lack of experience. Willingness and enthusiasm can certainly make up for a lack of skill.
But Mac Guffin is very correct that some virgins are virgins for a reason, and that’s why I was asking if I got to pick and choose or whether I was forced to take the whole lot as-is.
Well, I saw the post and it was stronger than I had remembered, I didn’t want to get into a big debate over whether that language actually constituted threatening someone so I stayed away from responding. But - here I am.
