How do you get somebody to do a really small carpentry job?

IKEA doesn’t make 9 inch wide cabinet doors. They do make a 9 inch little tiny cabinet, for people like me who ran into spacing issues, I suppose. What I need somebody to do is take a 15 inch door, take it apart, cut it down to a 9 inch door, and put it back together. (It’s the kind with rails and a panel, here. You can’t just rip it.) So it’s a small router job, I guess.

Ideally, I’d get somebody local, because I just don’t feel like drilling the holes for the hinges either (the little cabinet doesn’t have them where normal cabinets do) but I can do that if need be, so I could have somebody do it online. I’m willing to pay a fair price for it. But how do you find somebody, and what’s a fair price?

Craig’s list, baby. You can probably find local handymen advertising their services there, rather than having to post your own ad.

Fair pay would depend on how long the job took, I guess, and I don’t know enough about carpentry to judge if this is a quick 20-30 min project or what.

Find a carpenter, show what you’d like done, and casually show that you’ll pay cash.

I’m guessing $30 if he is local.

Also look for a woodworking hobby shop and give them a call to see if they might do it. The people working here always like a change of pace! And the hobby aspect means they have some fine work tools on hand.

The kind of store I’m thinking of is like Rockler Woodworking and Hardware

These guys are apparently in business for just such occassions. I haven’t used them, but have their number handy for when I want some simple built-in shelves constructed in my basement in a year or two.

It’s a small job, but just slightly beyond my finishing abilities. If you end up using them, I’d love to hear about your experience.

Should be able to find a custom cabinetry shop in the neighborhood. I don’t know if they generally take on small jobs like this, though, because setup is usually the most time consuming part of the job, and this project is just a one-off.

I think you’d be better off just making it from raw materials rather than trying to take an existing door apart. That’s a simple, Shaker style door. You might just go to a local cabinet company and have one custom ordered. If it’s paint grade, it might only cost about $30. Stain grade, more, depending on the wood species.

Or, maybe even Home Depot could do this.

Has to match all the other cabinet doors.

Any technical schools nearby?

There are a lot of companies that sell cabinet doors, including Rockler from Disheavel’s link upthread. If you can’t find an existing match, you might check with your local senior center. Lots of retired people are woodworkers and would welcome a small job and a bit of extra cash.

It’s just a Shaker style door. As long as the rails and styles are the same thickness, you’re not going to notice who made it. Here’s one from CalDoor w/ 3" rails and stiles. You can get them any size. Yours is a std 3/4" thickness, too.

I would take it to a local cabinet maker and tell them to match it. Should be a piece of cake. They’l be able to prep for the hinges, too. They will order it from a place like CalDoor, that I linked to.

I think Zsofia is saying that the material and color have to match the existing Ikea cabinet she has, so she wants to use the Ikea door that matches but is the wrong size.

Yes. And these companies can make any door size in any species of wood. Ikea doesn’t hand craft their doors. They have them made to standard specs. Handcrafting a doors to match a manufactured door is kind of silly. Just get another manufactured one.

If I were making that door, it would take me the longest amount of time to figure out what length to cut the rails and stiles to.

Many hardware stores have contacts with local tradesmen (and women). Try your local small hardware store, and go to the Customer Service desk. (Usually, this is the place at the back that helps you lay out projects or do the glass repair.) Tell them what you are looking for, and they will probably be able to put you in touch with 4 or 5 carpenters.

How do I do it? I go to my brother’s workshop and tell him what I need.

Probably doesn’t help you very much, though.

My method is similar. Provide details of request, raw materials and one bottle of scotch to friends father. Be prepared to wait however long is necessary. Pick up promptly when notified of completion.

Apparently patience and scotch are his preferred methods of payment

The hard part is finding a really small carpenter…

I would start at a cabinet shop. They can either custom order an almost exact replica, remake your current door or have one made for you. It’s not that weird of a request since people damage their own cabinet doors all the time and need to have them replaced.
