There is a current topic I want to link to one I did about 4 years ago. How do I do that?
Same process as for outside links. For example – this thread is http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=848699
To link it in text, like this, substitute square bracket for () and write (URL="httpCOLONbackslashBACKSLASHwebsite.com)this(/URL).
Oops, those should be forward slashes ("/") not backslashes.
Two ways:
1)Copy what ever is in the URL bar at the cop and paste it here. For example, for this thread (at least on my screen) it’s http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=848699
FYI, there may be a … in the middle of it to shorten it, we’ll cover that at the end.
2)If you want a word you typed to appear as a link that goes to a place you link to, the easiest way is to use the board’s software, and most bulletin board software does something similar (as does most email clients and many other things that interact with the web). Type the word you want to use as a link. We’ll use the word LINK. Copy, to your clipboard, the page your going to link to. That is, highlight it and hit Cntl-C or right click on it and hit copy (with it highlighted). Now, go back to the SD page your making your post on. Highlight the word you want to use as a LINK. Up above the reply box you’ll see a greenish/bluish globe with a chain link on it. If you hover over it, it’ll say ‘insert link’. Click that, paste (right click>paste or Ctrl+V and hit enter. Your done. LINK
Tip: When that box pops up, it already contains http:// and it’s highlighted, If you just right click paste or Ctrl+v, it’ll over right that, if you’re not careful and you click somewhere or touch the keyboard, and that gets unhighlighed, it won’t get erased and you end up with a broken link, like THIS. Hover over that and notice the beginning, that’s very common.
You can also make one from scratch either with or without the help of that button, but this is far and away the easiest way to do it.
Getting back to what I was saying earlier. If you hit the quote button on this, or any other post, you can see the coding. So on an extra long link, that’ll show you the entire thing (as will hovering over it). However, if you want to see how a link is made, you can always quote it, copy the code and resuse it by pasting in your own URL and text. That also works for anything else, like if you want to know how someone made a certain color or [del]strikethrough[/del].
