How do you shower?

I grew up in a family of 7 with one bathroom, so showers were quick, to the point, and done. That has stuck with me ever since - lather up, rinse, vacate the bathroom. Lingering under running water does nothing for me, unless I’m really congested, then hot water beating on my face feels pretty good.

So, poll to follow.

Too many excluded middles. My showers vary based on a lot of factors.

I would have liked another option between:

  • Get in, get clean, get out
  • The shower’s not done till the hot water’s all gone

I get clean, then have a few moments luxuriating in the experience.

I used to be option one until a couple of years ago. I honestly think I only took about 1 and a half to 2 minutes. I recall once going to have a shower and after I returned, despite my wet hair, my visitor couldn’t believe I had left the room long enough to have showered.

About two years ago I started doing a series of isometric exercises to help with my permanently sore shoulders. By pure chance the first day I remembered to do them I was in the shower and the habit has stuck. It sure feels good having the water pounding on my neck, back and shoulders as I go through the routine. So I won’t stop doing it.

I guess about 4 or 5 minutes now as I have thrown in a brief mindfulness exercise too.

Rather than harp on the excluded middle, I chose the one closer to the truth (shower until the hot water is gone). That said, time pressure will often force the first choice, especially on weekday mornings.

My showers generally run about 3-7 minutes, depending on what I have to do. If it’s just wash my hair and body, it’s about 3minutes. If I have to shave my legs or whatever, that takes longer.

I just don’t get longer showers. Boring! I have things to do!

Mainly get in, get out. Occasionally I like to take a long hot shower, relaxes the body, the steam clears the sinuses.

My thoughts exactly! My husband likes to stand under the running water and solve life’s mysteries, while I’m planning what I’m going to wear and what I have to do next. Busy busy…

I often shave in the shower, but I turn off the water while doing so. I picked option 1, therefore. With the caveat “as long as I am the only one in the shower”.

Shodan

I tend to get in and out these days - I will spend longer in there in the winter months, though (mmm, warm…).
That said, at the moment I’m quite often fairly grotty (I’m working on a car project, so often covered in oil and associated grime) - so I do take a while, but it tends to be out of necessity. I also have long hippy hair so that takes a while to clean and untangle (the long hair is a fairly new thing and I’m still getting the hang of it).
So, anywhere between 5 and 10 minutes?

ETA: I do also shave while I’m in the shower, so that adds another minute or two.

I don’t even like to take too long to eat. I’m almost always done while he is still eating. I don’t get it. Why linger?

It takes me about 10 minutes to really become functional in the morning, so I have a pretty ironclad routine- shoulders, chest, arms, belly, crotch, legs, feet, face, back, ass. Then I shave in the shower, wash my hair, and get out.

In total, that’s probably 20-25 minutes of time in the shower, although probably between 10 and 15 of that is shaving.

Sometimes if I’m really tired, I tend to drop the soap a lot, or forget that I just washed something, and re-wash it, or worse, forget, and then turn off the water and realize that my hair is greasy or that I forgot my butt crack, and have to spin it all back up to wash my hair or butt crack. That adds to the time in the shower, but none of it is deliberate.

I’m in the shower for as long as it takes to get me clean and get my hair washed, then I’m out because I’ve got stuff to do. The only time I might linger under very hot water is if I’ve got a cold or don’t feel well and the heat/steam is helping. Other than that, a shower is a purely functional process.

I don’t literally shower until the hot water is gone, that would be inconsiderate. But I’m closer to that than I am to in and out. My morning shower has a routine that usually takes 20 minutes. I can cut out steps if I need a quicker shower in the afternoon or evening, but morning shower is what it is and it shall not change even if I’m running late.

I’ve always taken quick showers unless my back was sore. Then a couple of minutes of hot water playing on it helps. Recently the landlord installed a filter/water softener combo on the well and now I spend about twice as long trying to get the slimy feeling scrubbed off. I finally realized it’s not gonna happen because the slime is in the water and I’ll just have to towel it off to feel clean.

I aim for quick, but sometimes a shower just feels so damn good.

Some (a lot of) people have caffeine addictions. I take a fifteen minute shower most mornings, instead. Mornings are terrible. shrugs

(FWIW, my shower after the gym in the afternoon is about 90 seconds.)

I don’t rush, but I don’t daudle either. Wash up, shave and dry off in the shower. About 10-15 minutes.

This morning I kinda timed myself. I had set the timer to know when my washer was done (it’s in the basement and I can’t hear the beep upstairs) and just before I went to shower, I checked - it was at about ten anna half minutes. I walked back to the bedroom, tossed my robe and slippers aside, turned on the water to come to temp (maybe 30 seconds?) then got in. Today is shampoo day, but I only lather and rinse - they don’t catch me with that “Repeat” trick! Then I washed the rest, top down, and did a double rinse - turning around twice just to be sure I got it all.

Out, dried, deodorized, hair combed, facial moisturizer, then dressed in undergarments and shorts. I was pulling on my shirt when the timer beeped. On non-shampoo days, it might take a minute or two less. So my normal shower is closer to 5 than to 10 minutes.

It really depends on my frame of mind, too, and how tired I am and when the shower is taken. If it’s after a run, like last night, I’m still usually really warm, so I get in, rinse off, wash anything necessary and get out within about 2-5 minutes.

If it’s early morning and I’m still tired, I might linger a bit longer, but not much. If I want to lounge around in hot water, I’d much rather do it in a tub. Then I can sit down and relax.
