Winter is upon us round these parts, and out has come my scarf and gloves and heavy coat. I have a rather light weight wool scarf about 4 foot long (it’s a tight weave and is effective but not thick like others I have seen). I wrap it around my neck, fold it over itself in front of me and then put my coat on over it to keep out the drafts from around my neck and down the front of my coat.
If I am only a bit chilly, I wrap it loosely around my neck twice, so that I end up with both ends of the scarf dangling in front of me.
If I feel ambitious, I create a Regency-style neckcloth out of it, in the Waterfall style, by wrapping it close around my neck two or three times, overlapping slightly and leaving one shorter end in front of my chest. Then I tuck the long loose end up underneath all of the turns around my neck, pull it out the top and lay it flat and straight down the center. Finally, I tuck a bit of the loose end of the scarf up underneath each of the overlapped turns around my neck, so that it billows out as a line of ruffles down my chest.
Your method works best with lightweight, shorter scarves like the one you have, DaddyTimesTwo. With longer, heavier scarves, I’ll do something similar, but over the coat. This doesn’t work as well, I think, because the scarf loosens up more easily. Also, it doesn’t work if the coat or jacket has a bulky collar…
Mine are four-foot-ish. When it’s too cold for it to just ‘drape’, I wrap it once around, beginning at the front, tucking the ends into opposite sides of my coat.
I like scarves that actually keep me warm (note my location) so I crocheted one for myself. I start at my right hip, run it over the top of my head, then around my face, then around the back of my head, then down to my left hip.
Most of the time my scarf (it’s a longish one) gets wrapped loosely around my neck. I try to keep both ends in front but one almost always ends back over my shoulder. If it’s cold out then I will either wrap it around my lower face/neck and tuck the ends into my jacket. If I don’t have a hat it wraps over my head and partially around my neck.
I did make a shorter one for myself, that one just tucks around my neck and the ends beneath my jacket.
My brother has a really long thick wool scarf he got from LL Bean or something years ago. He wrapped it all around his head and neck and still had enough that it hung in front or back of him, which I imagine is along the lines of what chique and flutterby** are describing. If I spent more time outside, like when I was in college or had to walk farther to work from the parking lot, I would find something similar. Mine works for me I think, although it could be a bit longer I suppose.
You know, growing up in Houston, I don’t think I ever wore a scarf, though I owned one or two for some reason (I think they were gifts from relatives from the midwest). The two years I spent in Dallas it got nicely cold and snowy occasionally, but never cold enough I thought to warrant one. Then again, I was one of those fools out playing barefoot in the snow with short sleeves and suffering no ill effects. Exactly what does a scarf do that a good coat and hat doesn’t?
Where I am it’s not so much the cold, it’s the wind. It sneaks in through the neck of your coat and sends a chill down your spine, or say if I am wearing shirts with a v-neck the cold seeps through. I like to protect my neck/chest area. When it’s extra cold and snowy I need a layer over my face, or if I forgot my hat and my ears are getting cold I can use it to keep them warm.
It really has multi purposes, and I wear mine most days in winter unless it’s strangely warm. Like it was today.
I just switched to this method of scarf wearing, and I’m loving it! It’s much better than my previous method of doing the knot in the front. I find it stays much more snug and keeps the wind and chill away from my neck.
I do the loop-tucked-under-jacket thing when it is really really cold. Usually though, my scarf is more to add some movement and color to my outfit, so I wear it wrapped once around my neck with one end in front and one in back.
Yes. I love scarves. Winter scarves and the jaunty little silk ( or reasonably similation thereof) to tie about my neck.
I think silky scarves are one of the best fashion thingies you can do.
Winter scarves are great for so many different things, like wrapping around the cold handles on the shopping cart because you left your gloves in the car.
It wraps around your face so your cheeks and nose don’t turn to ice, and stops that frigid, damp wind that blows through the gap between your neck and the neck of your coat so you don’t feel like you’re literally freezing your tits off.
I’ve got one of those hooded scarf thingies, and how I wear it depends on how cold it is and how long I’m going to be out. Sometimes I just hang it around my neck and put the ends together in my coat. Sometimes I put the hood up and cross it at the neck and tuck the ends into the coat. And sometimes I have the hood up and the scarf wrapped around my face, with the ends tucked into the coat.
Yup, thats the way I do it, I just couldnt quite describe it that succinctly. It has the advantage that you can easily pull it up over your nose/mouth if it’s really cold, just remember to move it down before you go into a bank/shop  .
