How does it feel to get shot?

Yes I know it would vary depending on location of strike and other factors. So how does it feel to be hit by a bullet. Or shrapnel for that matter? Both the immediate sensation and in the period before medical attention.

The one person I know who got shot, told me he never felt much pain, because the medic administered morphine quite quickly,

It has everything to do with what happend once the bullet entered. I have talked to many guys who have been shot and have witnessed a couple of shootings. A kid was shot in front of my house in the stomach and he was screaming in agony. A saw a guy get shot in a bar in the hand and the bullet went up his arm, he didn’t appear to be in extreme pain before the ambulance got to him, he was going into shock so that may have been the reason. A real common answer is that the pain sets in a few minutes or seconds after the shot. Bullets are just very unselective about where they go or what they hit. Extreme pain in not uncommon.

This is a question that can best be answered in MHO rather than General Questions.

That matches my experience. The immediate sensation was similar to being hit with a hammer: impact, rather than pain, accompanied by a false flash of white light. The actual pain started a few seconds later. The slug didn’t penetrate deeply, just traced a short path under my skin, and there was no muscle there to damage. The pain felt sort of like a bad abrasion along the path, raw and burning, rather than the sharp pain of a cut. There was also an ache in my head and neck, which quickly spread into a full-body ache; that was probably from a slight concussion and strained neck.

I got off very light in the pain department. In fact, probably pretty much any other scenario would have to hurt worse; my injury was really no more severe than a shallow cut in the same area would have been. Still, it’s not an experience I would recommend as light entertainment.

I managed to shoot myself in the thumb with a .22. The initial sensation was like getting whacked with a broom handle. I quickly wrapped it up and it settled down to a strong ache. When we got to the hospital and they unwrapped it, MAN, OWW! Just an intense, hot pain like you get from hitting your thumb with a hammer, but it doesn’t mellow from the initial shock. I once dislocated my shoulder mountain biking and reset it right there on the trail. Getting shot was worse.

I’ve been peppered with birdshot. It stung. I was a good distance away and wearing thick winter clothing. I got hit in the hip pocket, so mostly I was worried about my dick and balls; they’re fine. …ladies.

I think taking an actual bullet would be much different.

A tough one. Bullets can’t talk.

Shot myself in the calf a few years ago with a framing nailer. Not a bullet, not as fast; but still a fast moving piece of metal. A 3 1/4 inch long piece of metal. Sunk it.

Didn’t feel it for a couple minutes. Had to search to even find it. I thought I had missed but then noticed that my pants were strangely puckered in one spot. It was hurting pretty good by the time I got to the hospital, but no the worst thing I’ve felt by a long way.

This was into straight muscle; no bones, organs nothing complicated. I am sure either of those or the hydrostatic shock of a fast moving bullet could ramp the pain up a lot.

It would hurt.
