I mean are you walking down the street and a guy says
“Psssst, hey you, wanna bomb things?”
OK I can see in poor places how they set up schools for children and give things to families in places like Lebanon and the Sudan and other poor countries
But how does it happen when you see terrorist, that’s like an America?
I’m sure you don’t go to Al Qaeda dot com and sign up
(And yes I am aware there are other terrorists besides Muslims, like the Basques terrorists in Spain and the guys who killed Aldo Moro in Italy)
Terrorist is our label thats attached to them, usually they are a freedom fighter type organization that uses terror as a legitimate target to free the oppressed. I cant speak to how they get inducted as every region is different, but its probably no different from joining a gang in the states or canada.
I’d assume, like Declan says, that joining a terrorist group is like joining a gang. You might try reading Harlan Ellison’s account of his infiltrating a gang. (I haven’t read it.)
The first thing you’d need to do would be to start hanging out with radicals. If you are looking for an Islamic thing, look around and figure out what mosques around you are known for being hard-line. Just keep your ears out and figure out where the extremists are hanging out. It shouldn’t take too much searching to find the places where extremists congregate.
Then you need to build trust. Start going to meetings. Participate in social activities. Do people favors. Spend time with them after work. And subtlety let them know you stand where they stand. After some time they will probably ask you to do some small favors more related to the cause. If you do this well and they trust you, then they might open up to you and start letting you attend the more radical meetings. From there you are golden.
Around here there is an occasional cross burning that is intended to strike terror into the heart(s) of someone.
Gang mentality…that’s what does it. A couple of individuals get together and discuss that their group/cause is better than some other group/cause and they need to do something to get a one-up on that group/cause. They make their group/cause more attractive to other individuals of like intrests. Someone raises a rally cry and someone that is most dedicated does something desperate. It works that way on playgrounds and it works that way with world governments. Terrorism is just a cheap and easy tactic.
