Definitely sounds like money laundering from the OP’s description of things.
As for the IRS, when they catch up – Form 8857 - Request for Innocent Spouse Relief
PM for a good lawyer in this sub-specialty

That’s what I think. It would be his second time.
So today…she tells me he took a loan out against her Lexus. A $30,000 loan. Without her permission. Several months ago. “Forgot” to tell her. He must’ve forged something? So now she’s even more scared - what if he doesn’t pay it back? If she makes him mad, will he stop paying things? I think that’s why he told her today…it makes her more anxious. She’s a very shy and sweet woman who doesn’t like to fight - ever. She tried to consult with a divorce attorney, but they told her it would be very expensive to reopen the divorce and take years and he could clean out the cash by then, etc.
He also asked if he could use her airline attendant pass to score a free hotel this week.
She’s so sick she’s numb. She’s beyond numb…it’s like she thinks she’s in a movie. He put $4m through an account in her name, put business things in her name and then had her sign it over, racked up her debt, took $1m from her family, cheated on her with multiple women AND had a baby with one (and bought that woman a house), conned her into paying for his medical insurance and bills (and Viagra! She even said, “Why did he need Viagra? We barely used it!”) and oooooooooooooooooh I want to murder him.
Oh yeah. He took her dog, told her it died, and gave it to his new g/f.
No, I think this is part of it. He has many. He originally told her he needed to divorce her so she could take things into her name and keep it safe from creditors. Talk about a fuckin long con!
I never, ever thought of this. That makes sense. My dad will play slots for hours, but blackjack is his game. Hmm. I know he’s a ‘bigger’ player at some of the smaller casinos. Something fishy is going on.
I hope he gets caught – after she gets paid.
She did make me promise not to turn him into the IRS. Fine. But I will definitely threaten him with it.
Did I mention her name is on a mortgage, but not on a deed — to two houses?
Heartily suggest he pay her back - not blackmail or anything.
She’s going to try to fly to their home state to see if she can appeal the divorce. I wish I knew people to help her…her life makes mine sound like cake right now. And I feel extremely guilty - I knew about The Other Woman since last year.
I just realized the rules forbid me from answering all of your questions. If you would be so kind as to join me in the pit, unless one of our compatriots has been so kink as to start a thread, then look there.
Who is going to Pit what? I don’t see anything other than a bad family situation that someone is confused and concerned about and rightfully so. It is weird story but people don’t tend to ask for advise if they grew up in the Cleaver family. This one is strange but I have seen and heard worse. What is your issue with it why do you think you have to answer any questions?
I have nothing useful to contribute, except that this is a perfect subject for the TV show Who The %$#! Did I Marry?
Hey! My wife was on that show!
Wow! I saw some of those videos.
She found out a few more things (guess how much her ‘new’ replacement-for-original-wedding-ring is worth? yeah) and talked to a lawyer and got a referral for a forensic accountant as well. Good. I figure he can’t argue with her too much in court. If he did something illegal, then he doesn’t want it known. So he should settle. I hope.
I knew my dad was a shithead, but I didn’t realize he was so fn…evil. I mean, he took everything of hers. Jewelery, credit cards, cash, etc. Convinced her to do this and that and…it’s just mind-boggling. Not only did he con her out of near everything she had, he’s still trying to do so. It makes me feel sick to think we’re related.
If anyone was worried about the accuracy of my posts, there are some Dopers (including maybe a mod - Marley) here that have my full legal name for Google-age…since it’s not a common one, my dad is really easy to find. I would’ve been called out on it already if I were lying. </shrug>
In case you missed it, there’s a Pit thread in which a number of people raise questions about statements you’ve made that don’t really have anything to do with what your real name is. Probably just a big misunderstanding, but you might want to check in just to set the record straight.
Pit threads never get anything cleared up. If someone had a legitimate question [which no one does] they could always PM me. I refuse to engage in shit-slinging contest.
Correct. I honestly believe you. A lot of posters here think that people can make up stories as well as the best fiction writers and that simply isn’t within the talent of most people. Everyone is prone to their own personal biases and selective fact sharing but I didn’t see much of that here except you don’t know everything and there is some conjecture just due to the nature of it.
It sounds perfectly believable to me because I have known people personally that have done that type of thing and worse. I think a lot of Dopers are unusually naive about what really happens in the real world so keep that in mind. They can easily believe that someone would want to become confused about their gender for example and want to resort to drastic measures to change it but more common stories about crime and corruption that have gone on since time began are simply too much them outside of TV shows and movies. It is a really weird phenomena here so have some pity and patience with their ignorance and naivety.
Thank you. I appreciate it!
I think my dad is the reason why I’m suspicious of self-made wealthy people. He’s the guy who tries to cheat everything. I mean, he’d work out a deal with a doctor for a negotiated price and then turn in the insurance bill for higher amount. He’d tell the movie teller that my 10 year old brother was still 6 so he could get a discounted ticket. Everything with him seems to be a game when money is involved.
