How easy it is to live a lie

Not sure how I stumbled upon this, but here’s how to lose your argument and discredit your friends in one easy step:

The irony is that he’s a good artist.

Hmmm… I caught a note that his cartoons are adaptations of others, not originals.

Hmmm… 300 views and nary a comment.

Frankly, I didn’t know much about Micah Wright before even seeing this thread. I’d seen his posters in places, and always gotten a laugh out of them, but that was about it.

Lying to bolster his anti-war position is execrable. But I think the only people who would believe the entire anti-war position is therefore intellectually bankrupt are those who want to believe that in the first place, and this is just an all-too-handy “silver bullet” for them. Seriously, does Wright’s lying about being a ranger somehow make Bush’s assertion that Iraq had ready-to-deploy WMDs true? Does it make the Bush administration’s confident pronouncements of “mission accomplished”, and the Iraqis welcoming US troops as liberators while they march down flower-strewn streets, true? Of course not. Anti-war assertions earn credibility because their truth is borne out by the facts, not by the personal history of the person making them.

Wright is a damn fool. He obviously succumbed to the illicit thrill of an extended mental masturbation session and now he has to face the consequences. There are no excuses for what he did, only explanations - and that is not the same thing.

This is reaching a little far, isn’t it?

It really surprises me that he was able to get away with it for so long.

Not at all. There are myriad reasons for not supporting the Iraq war. Reducing yourself to posing a gigantic lie in order to give your position more credence is indeed execrable. Wright’s an asshole of the highest caliber. He can now take his proper place alongside Michael Bellesiles as someone who has learned the hard way that the ends do not necessarily justify the means.
