That’s amazing. Since the distances from Lebanon that I got for the four cities nearest the extremes on my atlas map of the Lower 48 were significantly different E-W and N-S I just have to assume roads’ paths account for why the numbers are so much off. Line-of-sight and great circle measures only tell part of the story if you’re planning a trip, especially a long one.
It might be fun to know which latitude includes the greatest distance overland from the Atlantic to the Pacific, and which longitude has the greatest distance N-S and all on land (or over small lakes and such).
I seem to recall another geography trivia thread where that issue was at least brought up, if not answered.
My distance from Lebanon, Mid-East*, OTOH, is a measly 70.5 miles (113.4 km). So I think I’m the closest here to some kind of Lebanon…
Calculated as my distance to Rosh Haniqra, which is on the Israel-Lebanon border, and almost certainly the closest point on the Lebanese border from where I am)
That would have been a while ago… I think I’ve been back from Poland for (checks fingers), Oh, at least 2 years now…? (and it was a 3 day trip anyway.)
I’m at work right now, which is in Ra’anana, about 10 miles NE of where I live.
So I’m actually closer now to Lebanon than when I wrote the previous post!
