These tests are next to useless…
I’m on a corporate LAN but get speeds of 71kbps.
There are much better speed testers out there, that don’t rely on congested pipes to certain sites.
It claims to “simulate normal surfing behavior”, but normal surfing behaviour doesn’t involved rapidly grabbing loads of images from dozens of different sites simultaneously.
FWIW it was reading about 200kb/s for the UK and 90 for the world, which is little more than dialup…but it’s nothing to do with one’s individual connection (I just tried downloading OpenOffice to see, and it was running at around 95% of the 2Mb/s theoretical speed).
If anything, it’s a measure of fast the major sites it links to are running.
I only got 240kbps, but I do have an abnormally large penis.

This is why I get on Straight Dope so much. It’s pretty much the only thing that loads at a decent speed on this Og-forsaken machine and 9 dollar a month dial-up internet.
