At home, I have DSL (verizon’s bronze+ package), which doesn’t even approach the speeds I was told it would. Below is one link to test your download or upload speed. My ISP claimed that the DSL speed would be 768 Kbps max, and I thought that it would at least sometimes approach these speeds. However, I average less than 300 Kbps, and have never gotten speeds greater than 350, despite testing at all hours of the day.
So, I’m wondering, what speeds do others with DSL or Cable modems get? Please tell me your results for download speed at the link above.
I live in NC and am considering switching to cable if my speed doesn’t improve. I think that the problem is with my ISP servers or whatever they call it. Any comments?
727.3 kbits/s (90.0 kbytes/s) - bellsouth DSL - GA (and I’m running a bit slow right now since I am using the wrong modem for my laptop).
You might also look at www.dslreports.com You may see some comments on your ISP. The speed tests will analyze your up and down times and the tweeks section will recommend adjustments or packages to help maximize your performance.
cox@home (excite) cable modem in Santa Barbara, CA
1815 Kbits/s downstream from this test site. I’ve peaked around 300 KBytes/second, which is close to theoretical max, and hardly ever drop below 100. It’s the one thing I’m truely going to miss when I move into my new house in Oxnard in a couple weeks (no more renting, woo hoo!).
How fast? Actually quite slow, I’ve clocked speeds capable of 500kbps on my cable modem, but for some reason can’t seem to maintain any transfer over 25kbps.
*That first result was so high I suspect it was some kind of error or fluke. Still, late Sunday night–or early Monday morning, depending on how you look at it–I’m getting at least a Mbps+. My connection status box is only claiming 960 kbps right now; sometimes it will go as high as 992 kbps.
Upstream:
127.4 kbps (15.9 kBps)
127.8 kbps (16 kBps)
121.6 kbps (15.2 kBps)
Of course none of this makes the boards load any faster if everyone is making the server smoke.
Were we supposed to record kilobits or kilobytes? Looks like 1961.7 kilobits/sec (227 kilobytes/s or so) down and 221 kilobits/sec (27.6 kilobytes/s) up.
Thanks for the link! It solved my problem–I ran the tweak test, and it suggested I download DrTCP, to increase my MTU and RWIN values (whatever those are). For some reason, even though I have WinME, the numbers were way below the defaults. I just retested my speeds and they are FAST!!!
At the website in my OP, I just retested, and am now getting dowload speeds of 727.3 kilobits/sec (90.9 kilobytes/sec), and upload speeds of 72.1 Kbps (9 KB/s). Wow, what an improvement over my original <300 Kbits/sec downloads!
Thanks to all who replied! It seems to me that cable might give more bang for the buck, but I’m pretty happy right now.
