How Fast Do You Drive?

I generally drive at a speed that feels right depending on the road and the people around me. But that’s rarely more then 5 over the speed limit. Which is why I still have a perfect record after 10 years on the road.

      • I never really speded anywhere until I got a job where I had to commute to the big city. Now I still drive the limit in town, but do 70-75 on the highway if traffic is light and weather/visibility good, which is about what everybody else does. On some stretches of road it’s possible to see that there’s nowhere for police to hide, and I’ll push it to 85-90 if I’m in a hurry, and then slow down to ~70 at the end of that stretch of road.
  • I don’t speed very much in traffic, only when I hit a stretch of road where there’s no other vehicles, and no-where for police to hide (although now the state police drive unmarked Camaros, Explorers and full-size 4-door Chevy pickups, so you gotta watch even more).

In town I usually drive 5-10 mph over the limit, depending on the flow of traffic. In residential areas I go the posted limit (usually 20 mph) since there are kids playing, cars parked alongside the road, etc. They’ve really cracked down on school zones here, which are usually 20 mph, and they have made the fines rather steep lately, so I tend to be more cautious in these areas. The same goes for construction zones where the fine for speeding through them is double.

On the freeway where the speed limit is 65 in town I’ll usually go 70-75 (everybody else does). Outside the main city limits the Interstate speed limit is 75, so I usually go 80-85 there. On highways with a 55 limit I usually go 65-70 and will slow down to 55-60 if I see a car approaching, in case it’s a police officer.

At night I usually stay within 5 mph of the posted speed limit, though I will push it more if I am the only one out there and then slow down when I see oncoming headlights. Most of the speeding tickets I have gotten over the years were issued at night when it’s obviously more difficult to spot a police officer.

If I’m being environmentally friendly, I drive 65mph and average 22-23mpg in my Cherokee. If I’m in a hurry, I’ll drive 75-80mph. Last time I drove up to Washington I averaged 80mph. Since that’s an average, it includes fuel and food stops, and accelleration and decelleration from and to them.

On the Yamaha I generally ride 75mph, although I’ve ridden it for long distances at 120. I’d really like a faster bike.

If I’m in my 1946 Willys jeep, I cruise at about 40mph.

It depends on what I driving/riding. In the car it’s usually what everyone else is doing, so 10 over or so on the highway, in town, around kids/dumb people, it’s the speed limit.

When I ride the motorcycle it really depends on where I am, in town it’s the limit, on the east coast it’s usually with in 10-15 miles over the limit so usually 70-75. Once past the Mississippi all bets are off and I will travel at 80-90 everywhere. The last time I was out there, in July I was over 90 though Minnesota and South Dakota the majority of the way on I-90, the back roads it was 75-80.

I’m better now. Honest. I haven’t done that in about 8 years or so. I remember once hitting about 220kph and the rev limiter kicked in. Scared the shit outta me.

I used to think it was cool, but now in retrospect I look back on those days and I am just incredibly lucky I didn’t die or kill someone else :wally

I was a pretty good driver, but I’m better now… and I wouldn’t want to do that now.

I never drive faster than I can see. Besides that, it’s all in the reflexes.

Depends on the vehicle I’m operating, actually.

My Jeep will only go about 85 - 90 MPH or so with a tail wind, down hill and my foot jammed all the way to the floor. That’s what you get for driving a vehicle with the aerodynamics of a piano.

My motorcycle, on the other hand, will do my Jeep’s top speed in second gear…

But in town, I pretty much stick to the limit or below on either vehicle. Out on the open road (especially out in the middle of Montana, Wyoming, Nebraska, Nevada and a few other relatively “empty” states) I tend to let the vehicle seek it’s own comfort speed. For the Jeep, that’s usually around 75 MPH. For the motorcycle … let’s just say that I get there a bit faster

Hmm…I usually drive the speed limit in the city, and if I was in a rush, maybe 5kms over.
On the highway…110-115kms (posted speed limit = 100Kms)
I know I’m not a rebel, hehe, but I was on probation for 2 years and I didn’t want to blow it on a stupid speeding ticket (already did that once, hence why I’m on probation for 2 years).
But now I have come to realize that I am off probation as of last month…muhahahhaha…if only I had a fast car, then I’d speed all over the place.
Even with being off probation, I still drive the same as before.
I take alot of pride when people tell me how good of a driver I am.

When I was regularly commuting to school, I went about 85 in a 70. After being stopped twice in a week, I decided that was probably just a tad too fast. I slowed it down to 80 and haven’t had a problem since.

This summer I drove close to 6000 miles going around 10 MPH over the limit all the time. Not one ticket.

In town- usually at or above the speed limit by about 10km/h. On the highway I often go about 120, but beyond that my car can’t really handle (Tercel), but I’m comfortable at that speed. On rural highways (which I take to work) I might go about 100 (usually 80 zones). I keep a careful watch out for cops, and I am not too aggressive/tailgating unless I’m REALLY REALLY REALLY late for something, but even then I tend to stay back. I’d rather be late than…um…late

In town I usually drive the speed limit give or take 5mph.
On the highway posted 55mph I usually go 60-65mph.
On the freeway posted 70mph I travel between 80-100mph…

Since I have yet to drive on a read that has a speed limit higher than 45, I usually stay between 30 and 45.
