Thanks for the link. It looks like a fun thing to be part of. One of our rides for next summer will be Eugene to Astoria, then South on Hwy 101. Can’t wait for that one!
You have quite the stable of bikes! I’d love to see a pic of the one with the sidecar. If I had a motorcycle it would be a Triumph for sure.
My boyfriend and I have four scooters between us - GTS250ie, 2005 Vespa PX150, 2005 Stella, and a GT200L - my baby! Not sure we’ll add another one to our stable, but anything is possible.
Oh wow! Yes, good thing. You would be forced to learn defensive driving very quickly. That’s for sure. A lot of riders and passengers wearing sandals and shorts. EEK! Not me. I don’t go overboard with riding gear, but I always wear long pants, close-toe shoes/boots, and long sleeves. And often my leather jacket regardless of temp.
To the OP: I highly recommend you take the MSF BRC - Motorcycle Safety Foundation Basic RiderCourse:
There are two key factors:
learning how to handle and control your scooter
learning about hazards (traffic and otherwise) particular to scooter and motorcycle riders
Two very different skill sets.
Thanks to Joey for mentioning rider training upthread. I’m a certified MSF instructor, or used to be until my cert expired, with over 200,000 accident-free motorcycle miles. MSF training was key to my safety. I took the basic course early on, and then later took the experienced training course. I’m grateful for the training and knowledge gained through the MSF.
Another good training resource is that some police departments offer their training classes to civilian riders. I took the Alameda County Sheriif’s Office class and it was excellent. They offer beginning, intermediate, and expert level training. Search around you. If you’re in a suburban setting it’s highly likely there’s a nearby department offering such training.
As the saying goes, our daily goal as riders is to live to ride tomorrow, not just today.
Just briefly reviving this to say I’ve had no more problems with the scooter and I love her (the word for “scooter” is masculine in Italian, but mine’s female, just is).
Oh and I love that in America there’s a word for “lane-splitting”. In Italy it’s like “if I suits, I scoots”, i.e. where you can squeeze by, you go. Me myself, I try not to do anything too dangerous but it probably doesn’t help I stole some of my “tricks” from 16-year-olds on cinquantinos (50cc bikes).
Oh and someone offered to teach me to ride his classic 60s Vespa. The old style, with gears. Probably just around the block, or something, but I just want to be on one of those and been seen. Hey, I might even get a pic and post it.
Otherwise, no news, just that it’s spring, it’s sunny, I have a scooter!
