How hard would it be for the US to oust Castro?

My plan is to keep time going at one second per second and eventually Father Time will do the deed for us. If we’re interested in helping the Cuban people, why not end the embargo and let American investment gradually move Cuba to a market economy? Seems to me it would be cheaper (maybe even a moneymaker).

Just wait for the CIA to detonate that bomb they stuck up Elian Gonzales’ ass, once they get sufficent notice the two are close enough.

There’s not much to give back that any American company would really want.

However it’s not unlikely that Cuba might develop close business relationships with U.S. companies in a post-Castro world. More than likely the embargo will end the day Castro’s heart stops beating and the Cubans aren’t really all that ideological in my experience; they’d instantly want to get cozy with us due to the monetary benefits.

Five with Laos…

Companies, no. But there are still some elderly Cubans in Miami who seem to think that after Castro kicks it, they will get the old sugar plantation back. And they’re completely out of touch on that point.

Just wonder, why would you want to oust Castro. Is he doing any harm to the American’s interest ?

Yeah, I agree.

I don’t think most Americans do, it’s just a hypothetical really.

I’m the biggest anti-communist around and even I don’t support toppling the guy. No reason to, he’s not a threat and he won’t be alive much longer.

Honestly Castro isn’t all that bad comparatively speaking. He has done some nasty stuff (imprisoning/torturing/killing political opponents) but that’s actually been fairly sedate compared to a lot of the worst dictatorships. During the Cold War we supported dictators that did worse. And the pre-Castro government really was pretty bad for Cubans. The Castro government hasn’t been that great either, but recently the Cuban tourism industry has really exploded and could lay the foundation for a better economy for the future.

Something I’ve always wondered, too. If we’d been smart in the past 30-odd years, we would’ve ended the embargo, cozied up to Castro, and co-opted the Cuban economy through the wonders of capitalism. In 10 years it would be a thriving US vacation destination.

I don’t know if there would be terrorists, but I suspect such a move would antagonize the other nations of North and South America. You might say, who cares, but I think the Iraqi war would have been much easier if there was broad international support. And wasn’t it part of the Powell Doctrine not to enter into war without broad support from other nations?

Yes. Consider that Venezuela has made an alliance with Cuba. And the new government of Bolivia is at least sympathetic. Best not to antagonize them.
