I would have to guess the political troll comment is about the story in DC where a local county councilwoman was pulled over doing 105 and only got a improper lane change ticket.
The story has been big headlines locally for a week. Yesterday upon further review (read: firestorm) the Chief of Police issued her a reckless driving ticket for $500 and 6 points.
I know that’s the first thing that came to mind as I read this thread, but I did not mistake the op as being about that story.
I accidentally ran a red light (I swear it was completely unintentional) with a cop car right behind me. I was also absurdly nervous when I got pulled over and somehow managed to avoid getting a ticket. I think he just felt bad for me. My friends still talk about this miraculous event.
Almost 20 years ago I was pulled over for doing 45 in a 25 zone. I was driving back to work from lunch with three other guys, and we were running late. I know I was speeding; 45 seemed high but not impossible. The cop said he had me on radar. On a hunch, I said “45- really? Can I see it?” He said sure, come on back. I got out and we walked back to his patrol car. He leaned in the open window and pressed a button on the box on the dash, straightened up, and said “Damn- I pressed the wrong button. I meant to lock it in to show you the speed, but I erased it. It’s your lucky day. Just slow down.”
I got back to the car and the other 3 guys were incredulous- “Next time I get pulled over, I’m totally asking to see it on the radar!”
I had a tail light out.
Apparantly that wasn’t enough to actually STOP me though. Not until I looked suspicious for pulling into my house.
Well thats what piqued their interest then, look at your actions from their perspective.
I suppose it all comes down to how they explained themselves to you, I’d be happy the local police were being proactive myself.
After all the Yorkshire Ripper was caught because of a routine traffic stop.
