A hearty fuck you to an asshole cop

About a month and a half ago, I got a ticket for going 77 in a 65. The cop was professional, courteous and even offered me some advice on if I wanted to plead not guilty to it. I was speeding, he caught me, I accept that.

Last night, on the same stretch of highway, I get pulled over by a different cop. He comes up to my car all bluster and bug eyes asking me if I know why he pulled me over. I tell him I honestly have no idea. He tells me I was going 77 and that I had just passed a car on the right.

I abso-fucking-lutely did not do either of those things.

Because of my recent ticket, I was watching my speed. I was going 67 at most. I did pass a car on the left, but that was several miles before I even saw the cop. He’d have to be fucking Superman to see me with his little radar gun.

After stammering on about how I swear I was going 65. He yells at me to get my speedometer checked out and then hands me my license back with a warning.

I cannot even imagine why a cop would just make up a story like that and I can’t wait for the day he pulls something like that on someone who turns around and sues his job into oblivion.

I know it’s hard to believe, but he may have made a mistake. I hear that’s a possibility, even for cops.

Might be a good idea to check the radar reading again before yelling at a suspect. Not that difficult. I can sorta see where he might have made a mistake with the passing on the right thing.

Or the radar might have picked up another vehicle, is what I was thinking.

Wait a minute. A cop pulled you over for speeding and didn’t give you a ticket and you are calling him an asshole? The mind boggles…

I know you said you weren’t speeding but the cop clearly thought you were else why pull you over. Why make up a bullshit story just to let you off with a warning. Whether he was mistaken or not he had all he needed to cite you and convict you at court. He says his radar gun indicated 77 the judge says “guilty”. But he let you go without a citation and he is an asshole?

Considering the fact that I wasn’t fucking speeding and I didn’t fucking pass anybody on the right, yes he is an ass hole.

The fact that he was giving me the “I am tha law!” bluster typical of ass hole cops just made me madder.

I think he realized you were the wrong car, and let you off with a warning because of that.

I dunno, same reason a cop pulled me over for “my reverse lights being out.” From what I can tell, he just wanted to get close enough to me to ask if I’d been smoking any weed or if I’d had anything to drink.

It wasn’t until after he’d pulled away that I thought about it, and realized that I hadn’t reversed my car in the past hour.

Well the first part of this isn’t really true, is it?

Apparently, it was at least possible you were speeding, though not by the amount he claimed.

What part of “I was not fucking speeding” do some of you asshats not understand?

And even if I was going 67 instead of 65, no cop would pull me over and issue a ticket for that because no judge would let it stand if I fought it.

A pedantic asshole on the SDMB? Never.

I think it’s more likely he pulled you over 'cause of some type of profiling - I’ve been pulled over for not much, 'cause of the location and time (late night, near a bar), just to see if I’d been drinking. (no, I wasn’t). And that he let you go 'cause he didn’t smell alcohol. as for the “you passed some one on the right” - he obviously hadn’t planned out what to say.

I hate this question. IMHO, if a cop asks a citizen this question, he is already an asshole. Even if he doesn’t write you a ticket.

How the fuck is it being pedantic if someone says that they weren’t speeding, yet earlier says they could have been speeding, to point out the inconsistency?

Yes, you probably aren’t going to get a ticket for 2 miles over the speed limit, but I don’t get a ticket every time I speed. Not speeding and not getting a ticket are two different things.

Actually, if you were cited for doing 2 over, a judge probably would let it stand.

Our resident segment of the thin blue line, Loach, explains it pretty well here.

You aren’t likely to get a ticket for 2 over- but if you do, it’s still a valid ticket.

C’mon, now. His point was that the cop was chewing him for going 77, which he’s absolutely certain that he wasn’t doing. Maybe “I wasn’t speeding” was bad phrasing on his part, but it was perfectly clear what he meant.

If I’m at a red light and I stop two feet over the limit line, if a cop tickets me for it, that’s fair game (if a bit nitpicky, much like a 2-MPH-over speeding ticket). But if that same cop comes up at starts screaming at me about how I ran the red light and nearly t-boned oncoming traffic, then yeah, I’m going to think he’s an asshole.

Having broken the law in some capacity does not give an officer the right to be a self-superior fuckstick over some other imaginary wrongdoing.

What’s with all the cop hatred anyway? These are just guys and gals out doing their job. A job I wouldn’t really want to do. They’re humans who have good days and bad like the rest of us. The guy probably made a mistake. Next time you don’t get cheese on your Quarter Pounder is the guy flipping burgers an “asshole,” and a “self-superior fuckstick.” Jesus.

I’ve had a cop lie about what they saw me do when they pulled me over too. The cop says “you were going pretty fast coming across the bridge; a lot of people don’t realize that’s a 30 zone.” I hadn’t driven across the bridge; I had literally pulled onto the street driving away from the bridge seconds before the cop pulled me over. There were no other cars to be confused about. I think the cop saw me, assumed I had sped across the bridge like 90% of the drivers passing that spot, and decided to pull me over to see what else he could find. I got a warning.

Except the cop didn’t ticket him. Had said cop ticketed the OP, I would be on board. To me, the rant is instead that OP broke the law, OP got stopped and called on it, OP was let off with warning, cop is an asshole.

A mistake that would cost me a good chunk of change that I cannot afford right now and would put me pretty damn close to having my license taken away. His right to have a bad day ends at my right not to be accused of crimes I did not commit.

I don’t know what it’s like in fuckstickland where you must live, but here in New York there is quite a difference between a 2 MPH over ticket and a 12 MPH over ticket.
