How long Could You Live on Pemmican?

I tried pemmican (home made version). It is a primitve energy food (made with dried meat, fat, and dried fruit). It is greasy and hard to swallow. Yet, it was used for centuries to sustain life, and has a high protien to weight ration. can you live off this stuff for extended periods? Is the vitamibe C in the dried fruit enough to stave off scurvey?

Interesting question … it may vary recipe by recipe, the version I tried at a rev war recreation shindig wasn’t overly greasy, and was venison, cranberries, blueberries, wild strawberries and fat. I found the combination of all the berries rather nice and it didnt seem heavy or greasy. I would think that the vitamin content would depend on the berries. I do know that ‘tea’ made from sumac and pine tips, and other plant products were a dietary component, so if you ate the pemmican and drank the herbal tisanes that were high in C you probably wouldnt get scurvy - it really does not take a lot of C to prevent scurvy when it is consumed regularly…I would be more concerned about different micronutrients.

Where’s the fiber?

At least some types of meat protect against scurvy. The Eskimoes/Inuit/etc. eat mostly meat.

Are we talking until death by malnutrition, or by suicide?

Both Amundsen and Scott chose to use pemmican as a major part of the rations for their South Pole expeditions. Amundsen also included a little bit of chocolate for dessert, and his men all made it back alive. Scott did not, and…

Who cares? Fiber isn’t exactly an essential part of nutrition.

Second or Third Maze, I want to say the one with the pretzel or the orange, not the cherry.
Oh. :smack:
But I did think this said “How long can you live on Pacman” for a second there.
