Not a subscriber to Disney +, and don’t plan to be. (General cheapness, and also a principled decider not to subscribe to a zillion different channels–I get too many with my current cable package to justify paying for a few additional shows.) But I’m also a Beatles fan. So how long do you think I’ll need to wait to watch the Peter Jackson extravaganza?
I’m OK, mind you, waiting a year or two. (And no, I don’t need to be told how cheap Disney+ is on a trial basis, which I can then cancel after seeing the movie–I find that “cancel later” practices don’t work for me, and I end up subscribing to things I don’t wish to subscribe to, which is the whole premise of “cancel later” policies in the first place.) I’m just wondering how long it will be before it’s shown on regular cable, or on DVD, or something else.
Given that it wound up being released as a miniseries (not a movie) on a streaming network, I wouldn’t be sure that it will ever come out on physical media. That said, it’s the Beatles, and it wouldn’t surprise me if Apple music wanted a collector’s version or something to be released physically.
Does anyone have any data on physical releases of other Disney+ releases?
You might want to see what the most recent Marvel or Star Wars properties available to rent on Amazon are to get an idea of how long Disney+ exclusivity lasts.
I don’t believe that Disney plans to release any of their shows that have come out on Disney+. You can’t buy The Mandalorian, Loki, Falcon and the Winter Soldier, or Wandavision on physical media.
You can get the theatrical releases as hard copies, or rent them elsewhere, but they very badly want you to subscribe, so they’re keeping content that people want to see exclusive. I can imagine a deal where the negotiations to get it to The Mouse included an eventual collector disc, but I kinda think if they were going to do that it would have been released on Hulu.
The answer appears to be, “it may be a while, if ever.”
A Radio Times article on the series says, “There have been no plans announced for the release of The Beatles: Get Back on DVD or Blu-ray.”
As @Darth_Sensitive notes, Disney has not yet released any of their exclusive Disney+ content on physical media, or on other platforms. The Mandalorian, which was the first big release for Disney+, first came out two years ago, and it’s still not available anywhere else.
But, as @BigT says, because Apple Music likely owns the ultimate rights to this series, it would not be too surprising if they do release it on physical media, at some yet-unannounced date down the road.
