I found a story on the CNN Money web site today. The title is, “Rupert Murdoch on his divorce, succession, and his empire’s future”.
This story was listed on The Drudge Report (http://www.drudgereport.com) under the headline, “NY POST all-digital in 10 years”.
The following is a one-paragraph extract from the story. It seems to me to imply that Murdoch expects the NY Post will be all digital in ten years and will no longer exist in print form.
About adapting his newspapers to the digital age, Murdoch says that the New York Post, his money-losing daily tabloid, may exist only in digital form in 10 years. He expects the Wall Street Journal, which he bought as part of Dow Jones in 2007, to remain in print form longer.
My guess is that it will be out of business long before then. The current state of newspapers seems to be they are going out of business at an ever-accelerating rate and ten years seems to be far too long to expect any paper to remain in business in print form. The NY Post seems especially vulnerable. I can’t imagine the printed form will stay in business for the next ten years.
My guess is that the costs of producing this paper using newsprint and ink is just too expensive when compared to putting it on a website. Most all of the newspapers I know have either gone out of business or have migrated from newsprint and ink to a digital format on the web.
If you had to guess, how long would you expect the printed version of the NY Post to remain a going concern?
