I’ve seen the confirmed death toll is around 1200. Any idea how many people are unaccounted for, and (possibly) presumed dead?
The Times Dispatch has an article from September 18 which includes the figures for adults as well as children. It lists 2000 missing children and 6200 missing adults for a total of 8200 people who remain missing.
This article from the Clarion Ledger puts the number missing at 565 as of a week ago, just for Harrison County alone.
The Star-Telegram has an article that is slightly older which has this to say:
Another source puts the number of missing kids at about 2600.
The tone of all of the articles seems optimistic. I didn’t see much speculation about large numbers of bodies lost out to sea, but rather a conviction that given time these people will be located in the care of friends or relatives. I’m hoping that this means the death toll of 1200 will not rise significantly.
