Cecil-how many people again collectively were in World Trade Towers I and II when the terrorists crashed the planes into them? How many survived?
I’m not Cecil, but nobody is.
If my memory is accurate, on September 11, CNN continually said that 50,000 people worked in the Towers. Now, the attacks occurred early in the morning, which means that many had probably not come in yet- which I bet saved lives. I’m trying to find numbers of survivors, but this is a gigantic pile of info here. Another factor that apparently worked in the favor of those in the Towers that day is that many of them remembered the bombing in 1993 - which did some damage and injured hundreds, but didn’t kill anyone - and as such were in a better position to escape this time. (I guess due to a combination of keeping their cool and having been through this before.)
Also, remember that not all of the people killed at the Towers actually worked there. A good portion of the victims were firefighters, police, and other rescue workers.
Just wanted to remove the ‘probably’ from this sentence. There were definitely employees who had not made it into work at the time of the attacks.
I recall hearing there were about nine employees killed during the bombing at WTC. Haven’t been able to find the info yet.
Hmm. Wonder why I thought it was zero. Actually, six people died.
Only four persons caught in the debris of the Twin Towers were found alive. An additional 14, mostly fire fighters, survived in a lower part of stairway B of the North Tower that stayed upright.
Is that a joke?
dopetalker, please use descriptive thread titles when you post a question here. Thank you.

dutchboy208, I believe Marley23 was referring to the 1993 bombing of the parking garage of the World Trade Center, not Sept. 11, 2001.
I think he’s talking about the 1993 bombing. The one masterminded by the blind guy.
Marley23 is talking about the 1993 truck-bombing of the WTC:
dutchboy, that figure is for the 1993 bombing, not 9/11.
Right, yes, thanks Walloon et al. I was referring to the 1993 bombing (the mastermind was Ramzi Yousef) in my first post, and didn’t reintroduce it because I thought it was clear that I was talking about the first one.
Wasn’t 9/11 also some kind of election day and also a Jewish holiday, both contributing to late arrivals at work that day?
IIRC there was some sort of a local NYC primary election on September 11. As for the holiday I don’t know, but you may be thinking of the comprehensively discredited UL that Jews working in the WTC somehow ‘knew’ to stay home that day.
It was the statewide primaries. A few hours after the attacks the governor cancelled it and an order was issued rescheduling it for a later date.
And it was apparently not a Jewish holiday.
The primary for the city elections in 2001 were originally to be held on 9/11, and were cancelled and moved after the attacks took place.
The 50,000 is possibly greatly exaggrated. Virtually no one survived who were above the contact points at the time of the two impacts and 300+ of the 3,000 deaths were police, fireman and other recue workers in or near the buildings at the time of colapse.
I believe the 50,000 figure refers to the entire WTC complex, not just the two big towers. But let’s do a little simple math and see what we find out. If we subtract the 300 police and firemen, we’re left with 2700 civilians dead. For the sake of estimation we’ll assume that the mortality rate above the points of impact was 100% and that most of the victims were from there.
Each tower had 110 floors, and the north tower was struck around the 92nd floor. The south tower was struck around the 80th floor. That gives us 48 out of 220 floors from which most of the victims came. Assuming people were relatively evenly distributed throughout the buildings, we can estimate that there were ((220 x 2700) / 48) = 12,375 people in the towers at the time of the attack. That does seem kind of low to me, though, even taking into account that the planes struck fairly early in the morning.
