How many baseball caps do you own?

I think I have only 2. One from when I was in the Navy, and one from a temp job I had 3 years ago. My husband has about a dozen - when he’d go places for work, often he’d be given a ball cap. He doesn’t wear them, but we’ve got a full basket in the top of the hall closet. Come to think of it, I should probably get rid of some of them.

Not around here in this are of NC. A “baseball cap” would refer to a cap used for baseball, probably with a baseball team logo on it. We would just call it a “cap” or even a “hat.” In general conversation, we might refer to one as a “feed cap” or a “gimme cap.” By far, the primary use of these would have been by people working in the fields, though they have obviously migrated to younger people who have never done farm work. Nobody calls them “baseball caps” unless they actually are (or if they migrated here from a baseball area).

I have 8-10, all given as gifts.

I literally *never *wear a cap. Putting something on my head before heading out the door is as foreign to me as routinely jamming an avocado in my back pocket before leaving the house. It would actually feel weird.

I acknowledge that I am in the minority. I get that many make a mental note (“keys, wallet, cap…”) before heading out.
mmm

I’m guessing I own 8-10 different Dodger caps. When I an done with one, it goes on the back ledge of my car facing out the back window. Most I bought, although some were promotional giveaways. I have a couple of Cleveland baseball caps, a couple of Orioles caps, one LA Kings cap, and some miscellaneous giveaways (a Mariners cap and a Honda cap are the ones that come to mind immediately).

We have a winner! (Or possibly - a loser? ;))

puzzlegal, you and I see this similarly. By his/her name, running coach may have some reasons for perceiving differences that we don’t.

This reminds me of something I first encountered in birding - the difference between “lumpers” and “splitters”. Lumpers tended to favor fewer species, with local variations, whereas splitters urged for a greater number of species - often based on minimal and/or tenuous distinctions.

Like you, I own a couple of hi-tech t-shirts. I consider those a subset within the larger category of t-shirts. I used to own some wicking golf shirts (but got rid of them, as laundering failed to remove body stank.) To me, they were golf shirts (tho someone else might call them polos, or something else.) I was surprised a while back to discover that what I had thought were my favorite swim trunks were - in fact - volleyball shorts! :smack:

In a prior post, I suggested that “splitting” is a useful tool for some marketers. I wonder, if I buy a “running hat”, and wear it while golfing - or playing baseball! - does it become something else?

I have 6-8 or so, most accumulated during trips when I forgot to bring one along and needed sun protection.

They generally fall into the categories of college/pro teams I don’t root for, or obscure public golf courses.

By the way, prior to this thread, I had never encountered the terms “feed cap” or “gimme cap” and would have had no idea what those words referred to.

I’m from England. I bought a baseball cap when I visited Las Vegas (go the 51s!)

Somewhere, I have an actual baseball with their logo on it. The coolest logo in all of sports!

I have 10, collected from around the world such as my Hard Rock Cafe Kuala Lumpur cap and elephant-polo torunament in Thailand. The few I tend to wear most is University of Hawaii; Shanghai; Tiger beer (from Singapore); and The Dubliner Irish Pub in Bangkok.

I wear 3 or 4 regularly, I own at least ten depending on how strictly you define the style. I have a few which might be called “painter cap” style. My favorites are my two John Deeres. Another favorite is black with the Stihl chainsaw logo.

To expound on my previous:

School: TCU Horned Frogs (former student alumni), McKenna Limosin (former leasee of farm’s cattle business), LA Dodgers (New Era giveaway), school baseball team (with a variation of the hated NY Yankees logo)

Car: Stanford 2013 Rose Bowl, TCU Horned Frogs

Pack: TCU Horned Frogs

Home: Mel Brooks (The Hat), SDSU, Dodgers, Cubs, Padres, Mariners, Tennessee Vols, U of Kentucky, Vanderbilt, USC, UCLA, Georgia State, Texas Tech, U of Idaho, Washington State, Caterpillar, Sinclair Oil, Rollin’ Smoke BBQ, a couple of Loot Crate caps, and misc. local golf tournament caps I got from my father.

So change my vote from “6-10” to “a fuckload.”

Now that I’ve had a chance to go home and look at it, I see my Japanese Mariners cap is indeed an official MLB cap, with the MLB tag inside and a small Mariners logo on the back. I must have bought it at the old Kingdome somewhere around 1990 when attending a Mariners’ game there. It’s one of my most treasured hats, so I don’t wear it often.

I really expected to be in the trail here. I know others with way more than me.
I only wear about 8 or 10 and the rest are in the closet. I counted them because my wife was asking me to get rid of some. So she could have the room for her stuff.

And if it has a bill and covers my head, it’s a baseball cap. Never heard of all those other monikers.

Nine, plus one I never wear. It is from the old Riverside Raceway, and It is a rarity and I am keeping it in pristine condition. I wear one every day since I walk a great deal (no car or license).
Wear one backward? At my age? Sir, you must be joking!

Here in the midwest, I first heard “feed” cap to refer to ones with logos for seedcorn brands like Dekalb. They generally had fabric front panels, with the rest made out of plasticky mesh, and a plastic adjuster in back. I assumed they were given out for free by farm suppliers, and were commonly worn by farmers and truckers.

I’m up to around 50. Most of them are team caps. And since my Cubs won the World Series, I have had to collect most of the postseason-related caps from 2015-2017. But I live in a hot place (AZ) so I don’t really wear them when it’s over 90 degrees.

I have around 20 or so. Some I haven’t worn in years or at all (see: Yankees). The ones I can remember are:

2 Cal Berkeley
2 LA Dodgers
1 Brooklyn Dodgers
1 Anaheim Angels
1 Orix Blue Wave (old Japanese team)
1 New York Yankees
1 LA Lakers (NBA)
1 LA Kings (NHL)

Around 8-9 caps from Disney theme parks.

I have half a dozen or so. There are three that I wear the most:

[ul]
[li]a black hat with the Dogfish Head logo on it (that I bought at their brewery in Rehoboth Beach)[/li][li]a dark blue hat with the Washington Nationals’ “DC” logo on it (i.e., not the curly “W”)[/li][li]a beige hat with the Washington Nationals’ “DC” logo on it[/li][/ul]
Another favorite is my Yankees hat, but I rarely wear it anymore because the “adjustable” part is wearing out. I really need to get another one.

I mostly only wear hats when I’m going to a ballgame, or if my hair will look like crap otherwise: if I’m going to be sweaty, on windy days, at the beach, if I go to the grocery store on a lazy Saturday when I haven’t washed my hair, etc.

I never wear them with my hair down, only with a ponytail. And I never wear them backwards, because said ponytail makes that uncomfortable.

I had many back in the '80s/'90s. Don’t know where they are now and haven’t worn one in years. I think it’s funny that kids have fancy names for them these days, especially the cheap ones we would get from low budget little league.
