Beard and mustache 90+% of the time for 45 years.
Been full beard and stache now for about 6 years, currently the beard is about 5-6".
Before that I pretty much rocked the goatee or some variation since my early 20s. (I’m 44 now.)
Except for one misguided summer on the mid 90s with a soul patch, shiny bowling shirts and frosted hair. I looked like Guy Fieri’s douchebag cousin.
I marked ‘random’, because I was in the Navy for 23 years. I’ve had a mustache for about 50 years, but the beard came and went according to the Navy’s policy. First you couldn’t, then you could, then you couldn’t, then you could again, then they abolished them. Once I left the service in 1990, I grew it back and still have it.
Thirty eight and couldn’t grow either if i tried.
Mustache at about 19, shaved it a few times for jobs. Probably permanent since 22-23, and the beard since 25. If I’ve ever shaved it off since then, I can’t remember it. Certainly not since late 20s, so I’ve been this stylish every day for at least 30 years.
My facial hair comes in kind of splotchy, in part due to scars from a bad case of acne when I was a teenager. Also, while the color of my mustache is similar to that of the hair on my head (a sort of dirty blonde), the rest of my beard is sort of reddish. Weird.
Anyway, due to this, I’ve never worn a beard for any serious length of time. I’ve done longer sideburns from time to time, and I tried a full beard for a few months, a couple of years ago, when I was unemployed for a while (it wasn’t a good look).
I’ve had a moustache for most of my life, but my entire life isn’t yet 50 years. Where’s the option for that?
When I’m on vacation my face gets a weeks vacation too. Then it feels annoying and itchy. I don’t think that counts.
Facial hair doesn’t work for me. It’s pretty thin to begin with, and has always (since puberty) been about a 50/50 mix of dark brown and transparent-blonde hair.
I’m 55. I have been capable of growing a full beard and mustache since high school.
(Also, I only have one eyebrow.)
Sidetrack, because I feel like sharing: back in the TV stone age on Dobie Gillis, Maynard G. Krebbs referred to his goatee as “Chin Spinach.”
I’ve had both since the mid 80’s. Always a mustache but the beard has done through several evolutions of full beard to goatee. Had to loose the beard for a year due to a job where I had to be able to wear a full face respirator in the event of an emergency.
Didn’t tell my girlfriend first and she didn’t recognize me…
50, 40, 20, 10, 5?
How did you come up with your time scale?
I seem to fit in with the majority here on this one. Have had a Van Dyke since I vas about 20, so for almost 30 years.
i’ve never shaved my mustache. Therefore, I’ve always had it, though my mom begs to differ.
Mustache for a long time. Occasional beards maybe 4 times in the last 30 years lasting between 6 weeks and 2 years.
Never a stand-alone mustache, always with a beard. First one was when I was about 27 (shocked my mother all to heck), and usually had it with occasional removals for several months/years. Shaved it off in June this year and decided quite quickly that I didn’t like my face all that much without it, so I am in week 3 of growing it back.
Have had a mustache since I got out of AF basic training(1970) For some strange reason medics were the only tech school trainees permitted to have them. Started growing a beard to fill in my face the day I got out of the service, and have had it ever since, 43 years and counting. I like the color now, silver gray, but always wanted one of those full,bright-white Hemingway or Santa beards.
Not sure how we’re supposed to vote if we’re under 50 (or 65, really).
I’ve grown a beard pretty much since the end of eighth grade, which would be 18 years ago. Though it was really scraggly then, so I did shave it off for a bit, and switch on and off until around 18. So either 17 or 13 years, depending on when you start.
From then on, I’ve pretty much worn a mustache and beard, occasionally shaving it all of just to let it grow in again, like I did about a week ago.
I also always have sideburns, down to almost the bottom of my ear, as my head is kinda long. My beard is the Van Dyke, though most people call it a goatee.
With a mustache, unless I was being silly. And occasionally I’d leave a 70s mustache for a day or two when shaving it all off.
Next year will be the 20th anniversary of my van dyke (which was not an option, so I went with “mustache & beard”). I am now approaching the point where I’ve lived more of my life with it than without it. And I’ll never shave it off.
I had a mustache from 17-23, combined with a mullet during a part of that time. I looked ridiculous, like a German national soccer player from those times (well, I’m German and I played soccer, but was never close to national level ;)). I shortly grew a full beard with 20 after my military service, but that was only an act of defiance after being forced to shave every morning for fifteen months. I had some phases during the 90’s and 00’s when I sported a goatee like this (of course better trimmed and anyway, of course I’m more handsome than this, er, person ;)). In between those beard phases, I’ve always worn 1-5 day stubble until today.
