I used to, during slack time, which was rare, anyway, but they’ve since institued an “Absolutely no personal use of the internet” policy, which took the Dope away from me.

Same here, except that I’ve never been able to post from work. Any personal use of the Internet at my office is grounds for termination. I’m so jealous of everyone who gets to read the SDMB at work!

Judge: Web-Surfing Worker Can’t Be Fired

Administrative Law Judge John Spooner reached his decision in the case of Toquir Choudhri, a 14-year veteran of the Department of Education who had been accused of ignoring supervisors who told him to stop browsing the Internet at work.

The ruling came after Mayor Michael Bloomberg fired a worker in the city’s legislative office in Albany earlier this year after he saw the man playing a game of solitaire on his computer.

In his decision, Spooner wrote: “It should be observed that the Internet has become the modern equivalent of a telephone or a daily newspaper, providing a combination of communication and information that most employees use as frequently in their personal lives as for their work.”

I worked a temp job a couple summers ago where I’d read the 'dope on my downtime. Basically they’d give me all this work to do, which would supposedly take all day but it would only take me two hours. So I’d do like 75% of it when I came in, then kind of surf the internet/do a little bit at a time for the rest of the day. I generally worked alone, so it was pretty easy. If the bossman was coming I’d close the web browser and get back to work- generally I worked it out so that it would appear I was finishing faster than average but not obscenely fast; I knew if I worked too fast they’d either just give me way more stuff to do each day or send me home early. Not wanting either of those things I kind of spread it out. I’m not proud of this, but it was the first job I had where I had to sit in front of a computer 8 hours a day and it got really tedious really quick.
