28 cousins on my mother’s side (Mom has an extremely large family; 16 siblings) and at least 12 on my father’s side, although I’m not as close to that side of the family and think I may have forgotten some of them.
Interesting question for me. I grew up all my life thinking that I had 2 first cousins: one a Harvard/Stanford educated liberal doctor and the other one a major ring-winged fundie in Alabama.
Then last year we learned that my Mother’s mother was NOT her real mother and that she was given away to this relative (my mom’s first cousin) at a young age because both her parents were deaf. So now I have 10 first cousins from this NEW side of the family. Of these 10, two have passed away and only one is deaf. So now I have a grand total of 10 living first cousins and 2 deceased ones.
We are going to Northern California in 2 weeks and I get to meet four of my new found first cousins plus a slew of second cousins.
22 that I can think of (4 on my father’s side, 18 on my mother’s), though one died before I was born and his brother I still have never met. It’s possible I have more, between not knowing my biological grandfather and how confusing my mother’s side is (though I think I can at least keep aunts, uncles and cousins straight).
Miss Mapp–wow. The largest family I know of is 11 or 12 kids. Which was normal for that generation around there. Now everybody seems to be stopping at 2 or 3 kids, except for my mother who only had me.
Seven in total. One on my father’s side. He has one sister and one brother. His sister has one son.
On my mother’s side, there are six. She had three brothers. One has three children, one has two, and the last has one. Of those six, two are adopted, but that doesn’t in any way make them seem less related to me.
Four. Two from my dad’s sister and two from my mom’s brother - although the latter two are younger than my son, so I always think of them more as “nephews,” relationshipwise. By definition though, they are cousins.
Five on my father’s side. I’m the only girl in that family and also the oldest. The next oldest is only two days younger than me. None on my mother’s side, although she has a ton of cousins because her father was one of…eight I think.
18 on my dad’s side and 2 on my mom’s side (my dad had 3 sisters and 5 brothers, my mom had one brother.)
My dad’s family, except for one of my cousins in the navy, one who lives in another town, one in MA, and my sister and myself, all live within five miles of each of other. And that cousin who lives in another town is the next town over. hey use any excuse to get together. Fourth of July? Big party! Christmas? Big Party? Tuesday? Big Party!
Help me here, I’m confused – can you really have a half-first cousin? Could just be me not making the connections correctly—
9 I think, read on:
3 are my mom’s brother’s sons
2 are my dad’s sister’s sons
2 are my dad’s brother’s sons
1 is my dad’s brother’s daughter (by a previous marriage before the Aunt I knew)
1 is my dad’s brother’s daughter who looked the family up after his death trying to find her birth family (stories of his womanizing are legion)
Now it gets tricky…the only woman I ever called Aunt who was married to my dad’s scoundrel of a brother had a son by her first marriage; so I guess I would call him a step-first cousin.
Have I figured this out right?
So I am thinking 9 and one “step”-- at least that we know of
On my dad’s side there are 28 (blood) first cousins, 3 adopted, 11 step cousins for a total of 42. On my moms side I have 8 (blood) first cousins and 1 step cousin. So on both sides I have a total of 51.
Three have passed away. Six of the 11 steps I have only seen once. I do socially interact with most of the cousins on my dads side, and saw all but one of the cousins on my moms side on the 4th of July.
I noticed what you’re saying about families growing smaller when I was tallying up my total cousins earlier this morning: my mom, who is the eldest daughter of the family, had 4 children, her next eldest sister had 7, and the one after that, 3. Everyone else in the family had just 1 or 2, as do my own siblings (one of my cousins does have 4 or 5 kids, but that’s rather unusual these days).
And I did forget 2 cousins on Dad’s side, bringing that number up to 14.
