How many Iraqi civilians were killed in the first Gulf War?

Has anyone counted them?

According to this, Iraq said 35-45k. The US said 2.5-3k.

This one says 15k

Its hard to find stats as some include rebellions, destroyed infrastructure & sanction deaths in the count for propaganda purposes. I’d assume those factors wouldn’t apply this time. Plus our weapons are probably more accurate.

You also have to take into account that the army in iraq is largely conscripted, so i don’t know if they would count as civilian casualties. If 110k iraqi troops are killed who are not there voluntarily, and who don’t want to be in the army and who would surrender given then chance then they should be a grey area between collateral damage & professional soldiers who choose to fight in a war.

If they are soldiers, if they carry guns, they will probably get killed if they don’t surrender quick.

Personally, I don’t think that the Iraqi number is even close. That would be like seriously bombing a large part of Baghdad with dumb bombs.

Almost all of the munitions deployed in Baghdad were of the “smart” variety.

smart bombs are useless if the intelligence controlling them is stupid - that is why 400 people died in a bomb shelter in the last war

sigh

The bomb shelter had been a bomb shelter. Then, after the Iran-Iraq war, the Iraqi’s started storing things there… small things, like ammo, and equipment. In civilian parlance, it’s called a “Depot”.

When the war started, they quietly took everything out and herded a bunch of folks in there, knowing the odds were good that it would get hit, since we had struck several similar targets.

One bomb later, and airman has a massivly guilty conscience and the Iraqi’s have a great video clip for the evening news.
Oddly enough, the Iraqi’s lobbed SCUD missles into Israel (a non-combatant) with no regard whatsoever for where they landed.

So I was hoping someone could tell me the official U.S. government figure. When and where was this count published by the U.S. government?
