…What are the best estimates for the amount of Iraqi soldiers that died in the 2003 invasion of Iraq? We have an exact figure for coalition deaths, a fairly good estimate for civilian deaths, but only wild speculation to the soldiers death toll. Any ideas folks?
…my one allowable bump, however, I don’t like my chances on a reply…
The officially stated policy of the Pentagon is that they do not count enemy casualties. I’m not aware of anyone who has really attempted a serious count.
The casualties were doubtlessly very substantial. The new generations of weapons used to destroy Iraqi vehicles were absolutely devestating. My personal WAG would be in the tens of thousands of Iraqi military killed.
Here is a list that includes several guesses at the death toll from the 1991 Gulf War. The estimates range from 1,500 to 200,000. The center of gravity for those estimates seem to be in the 30,000 to 100,000 range, which is quite a damn big range.
“Plan of Attack,” Bob Woodward says General Tommy Franks estimated that 30,000 Iraqi soldiers died during the first three weeks of the war - Including an on the record estimate of 3000 killed defending Baghdad.
