An orgy requires a ratio of no more than 1.75 guys for every one girl, rounded up. Meaning that if you have four guys and two girls, it’s an orgy, but if there’s five guys and two girls, it’s just another gangbang.
My criteria: In an orgy, there must be enough spare holes for every guy to get access without two much awkwardness (meaning none of that anal/vaginal double penetration stuff… every time I see 'em try to do it in porn, it looks like too much work).
So if you want an orgy, and have five guys but only two girls, you better invite another chick along… else it’s a gangbang. And gangbangs are just a lot less classy than an orgy. Don’t ask me why.

Really I would think an orgy would have no less than 3 of any given gender and including both genders.
I guess I’ve always assumed that those participating did not necessarily have a relationship with anyone else and that sexual stimulation may or may not be heterosexual.

I’ve always thought of gangbangs as multiple men penetrating a single woman by taking turns.
But lieu is closest, from all I’ve seen in “educational” films in high school at friends’ houses, and orgy involves a minimum of 48 people (roughly half and half), 3 goats, 5 gerbils, various gynocologic instruments, loud disco music and at least one dancing donkey.

My assumption has always been that any sexual grouping of more than two people is an orgy - we choose to specify different types of orgy : gangbang, foursome, etc, but being a gangbang or a foursome doesn’t preclude it being an orgy, it’s just specifying what type.
one could, however, argue that a gangbang doesn’t qualify since it’s not really a sexual grouping of that many people, just a set of man-woman groupings that all center on the one woman (or one man)

In all seriousness, is there some reason why heterosexuals feel the need to lay claim (pun somewhat intended) to the word “orgy”? Most of the definitions offered up break it down in terms of ratios of male to female or minimum numbers of each, and at least two people explicitly limit the definition to mixed-sex groupings or slap a qualifier on it. What’s up with that?

Nope, just a gathering of repressed people. To qualify as an orgy, it has to be anything goes with anyone else in as many multiples as you can find. They’re much more fun that way (in my experience, anyway).
