How many network devices in your house?

For reasons, I’m using NMAP and WakeMeOnLan and PRTG and AngryIP, and I’ve had occassion to do so at home. And – I’ve got 23 devices showing on the home network.

There are phones, and TV’s, and iPads and Desktops and WiFi routers and God-only-knows-whatsits.

Now, it’s a family of 5, but still, that’s nothing like it looked like 20 years ago

What’ve you got?

My iMac
Apple TV
Epson wireless printer
Router/modem

Let’s see:
5 Macs
2 Raspberry Pis
1 printer
3 TVs
2 Iphones
2 iPads

So, 15 devices

2 laptops
2 smart tvs
3 tivos
1 firestick
1 Chromecast
1 a/v receiver
1 blu-ray dvd
2 Raspberry Pis (1 pihole, 1 octoprint)
2 phones
3 tablets
1 Nest t-stat
2 Nest Smoke/CO detectors
1 webcam (that has ONE job, it’s so I can make sure I closed my garage door after I leave the house)
1 Leviton (POS) smart light switch
Plus a third raspberry pi that I got today, but it’s only here temporarily while I set it up, an Nvidia Shield that I’ll have tomorrow and a computer that, while I’ve scrapped it for parts, could be back up and working if I really needed it to be.

So let’s call it 25, but it fluctuates depending on what I have going on, if my daughter is here etc. My router only shows 12 devices connected at the moment.

4 Verizon Fios TV boxes
4 tablets (including an Amazon Kindle Fire which is an Android tablet disguised as a book salesman)
4 smartphones
4 Echo Dots (Alexa)3 laptops
3 desktop computers
1 Nest security camera
1 D-Link security camera
1 printer
1 Huawei smartwatch (yes, Huawei, and it’s great)
1 smart TV
1 Philips Hue hub (for smart light bulbs)
1 WEMO WiFi wall switch (for a ceiling fan)
And a Fios router/wireless access point in a pear tree

Pfft, I live a simple life.

7 devices.

  • 2 computers (1 mac, 1 PC)
  • iPad
  • iPhone
  • PS4 (which serves as my Roku)
  • Laser printer
  • Home thermostat

1 iPhone 6
1 HP Laptop

That is all.
I don’t even have a router as I use an Xfinity wifi hotspot located somewhere in the building.

It’s just myself and my wife in the house. We have:

  • 2 personal laptops
  • My work laptop
  • A wireless network printer
  • A Fire stick
  • 2 iPhones
  • An Echo and an Echo Dot
  • A microcell for our cell phones

Only 10, and I know that’s far less than what many of our friends have, who have gone full-in on smart home tech.

Oh dear:

one ClearOS server/gateway
router
UniFi access point
1 printer/scanner
2 Smart TVs
1 Chromecast
2 Smart BluRay players
1 XBox
3 Phones
2 personal laptops
1 tablet
1 desktop computer
1 Digital Audio Workstation
1 Raspberry Pi (Zynthian synthesizer)
2 Grid connect wifi enabled led lights
2 work laptops
1 dashcam
3 other Raspberry Pi - currently unused
1 other computer - currently unused, but may replace the server

2-4 computers, depending on what’s asleep at the moment–1 desktop, 3 functional laptops.
1 phone
1 tablet
Router
Printer

All just for little old me. I prefer not having too many dedicated wifi enabled devices around, I don’t know who programmed them or what they’ve been told to do. I can be pretty sure of the computers though. Fairly. Somewhat.

Are you listing hardware you own, or stuff actually connected to your router? Sounds like the former?

24 devices, but there’s just me:
Main desktop system
NetQuake seismometer
File server
Ecobee thermostat
PIxel 2 XL phone
Cable modem
Amazon Echo Dot x2
Amazon Tap
Amazon TV
Amazon Echo Show
Kindle
Webcam x2
Neato vacuum
Lights x5
Raspberry Pi x2 (one for my cat’s litterbox)
HP tablet
Nintendo Switch

However, I have several other devices that aren’t connected at the moment, like a couple of laptops, phones, etc.

It’s all connected up at the moment, it just doesn’t have a defined role yet.
I had some time off at home, and my wife was away, so I took the time to get the pile of parts hooked up and running for updates and reconfiguration.
One of the Pi’s was running CUPS for a printer, until that was replaced with a network capable printer. I might turn that into a retroPI arcade system. The Pi model B might become a Kodi box, and the 4Gb Pi 4 will become a Guitar Effects processor.
The computer was my sons old system (he just upgraded) - I built it into a new case and am running a reliability test to see if it makes a good replacement for my current server.

2 computers
2 kindles
1 tablet
1 phone
1 firestick

So… 7 devices. I was sort of surprised at how many I have. When did that happen?

About 50, 4 people.

3x Smart TV
4x Laptop
1x Server with some virtual machines
3x desktop
1x NAS
1x printer
1x scanner
2x smart watches
3x iPads
4x iPhones
10x IoT devices - alarm, smart plugs, light switches
4x Alexa
2x Google home mini
1x XBOX
1x Roku
4x Wireless Access Points
2x Managed switches
Misc laptops from work that I am servicing (2 at the moment)

1 desktop with a wifi device
4 laptops
1 tablet
1 iPad
2 phones (the boychik turns 14 soon, and will be getting his own phone)
1 Playstation
1 Smart TV
2 printers (we have one compact, portable printer, about 3 x 14 x 8; and one 3-in-1)

We also own a few appliances that are controlled by phone apps, so they depend on the wifi, but they are not directly connected to it.

Ooof.

3 laptops
1 desktop
3 phones
1 ipad
3 smart TVs
2 Rokus
2 Apple TVs
1 Amazon Fire
1 security camera
1 garage door opener
5 Google home speakers
9 smart switches
1 Nest thermostat
1 printer
1 PS3 that hasn’t been played in 4 years
There are some bluray players and unused old iphones that are technically network devices, but aren’t used/connected now.

Without trying to list them all, my security program tells me that I have 14 items connected during “prime time”. Couple computers, couple mobile devices, couple gaming consoles, couple TV related things and a miscellaneous thing or two.

Wow you lot are tooled up!

We have
3 laptops
One teeny tiny smart TV (32")
One TV box (I won’t bore you with the details, I don’t use it)
1 smart watch
1 Hive thermostat
1Printer
3 phones
And my one major indulgence, 4 sonos speakers

I’m not sure what connected to the router means, exactly. For example, our cars get software updates from our WiFi, does that count? Does DirecTV, which allows us to watch from any room from any DVR use our wifi system? I have no idea, but it seems like it must.

but, here goes

a desktop mac.
one laptop mac
a printer
two iPads
a fire stick
a Hydrow rowing machine
a Peloton bike
ADT security system
Alexa (2 stations)
Sonos throughout the house

coming soon: garage door openers
