How many Nukes have really been lost?

Nuclear weapons, that is. Glowing gold. Texas T…ritium.

I’ve seen a few lists of nuclear weapon accidents, but I’ve also seen other sources debunk a lot of “missing” weapons claims, noting that a few of them involved weapon casings that didn’t actually have any nuclear material installed. (Kind of like loosing an unloaded revolver. Not much more than a hunk of metal.)

Then, on top of that, there’s the question of how many nukes that Russia lost, over the years. And they’re not too keen to talk about it.

So, I ask you…how many nuclear weapons have really been lost, and never recovered?

I’ve not done a proper search, but I have seen a programme that IIRC said Russia had lost 1/3 of it’s suitcase bombs.

A quick search throws this up, saying that Lebed confirmed on CBS that more than 100 1kT bombs are unaccounted for. This is what I was remembering. Note that I haveh’t confirmed it to the BBC or even CBS.

Lebed is now dead (copter crash), so I imagine that conspiracy theories abound.
