We have a 2000 Windstar that serves as the primary family vehicle (3 kids). We also have a 2003 Explorer 4x4 that serves as my work transportation, driving in the snow vehicle (in fact, it is snowing hard here as I type!), hauling stuff from the home improvement store vehicle, etc.
2001 Hyundai Elantra GT. I absolutely love it. I drive it because it was the only somewhat sporty-ish car in my (modest) price range that had so many great features. That, plus the fact that my beloved 1988 Daytona bit the dust a couple of years ago, is why I bought it.
I drive a 2002 VW Passat. I love it. I drive to work alone. Bad me.
But here’s the deal…I cand drive to work in 15 minutes. If I take public transport, it takes 45 minutes when the bus is on time, etc. It costs about the same for me to park as it does to take public transport.
I am a classic example of the problem with public transport here in the DC metro area. There’s no incentive for me to use it if it takes three times as long and costs about the same as parking. Not to mention lack of flexibility.
1995 Nissan Sentra GXE, color is teal. I bought it in April 2001 with 63,000 miles on it. It just passed the 80,000 mile mark on New Year’s Day. The only problem I have had with it so far is replacing the alternator about two months after I got it.
1998 Honda Accord–my first car, in that it’s the first car I’m paying for myself, loan and all. Formerly drove an '84 Nissan Sentra who finally kicked the bucket at about 350,000 miles. Before that I had a '78 Fiat Spider, a little 2-seat convertible, black with red interior, speedy little thing, which my dad found in an alley, bought for $150, spent three years restoring, then shortly after my 16th birthday when it finally became mine and I finally got to drive it everywhere and be the envy of all my contemporaries, my parents found out that the reason it sat in an alley neglected is because two people, in two separate incidents, including the guy who owned it died in the car, and his daughter didn’t touch it for ten years after that. cue spooky music
They got creeped out, she got sold to a collector, and I ended up with an '84 Nissan Sentra.
Oh, and I drive because having to bum rides off people or rely on public transportation sucks big time. We also live one (large) state away from my family, who I visit fairly frequently, and all in all, it’s not terribly feasible to be without a car.
I bought a car because I live in the suburbs, and it’s impossible to get to work and school without it. I bought a sports car because it’s what I’ve always dreamed of owning.
And I’m proud to say, I paid for it entirely with my own money.
Me: 1998 Civic
Husband: 2000 Ford Ranger and old crap Mustang he’s been restoring piece by piece since the dawn of time.
I do actually use public transportation or walk/bike quite a bit, but my job requires me to visit several stores a day, not just one, so bussing would be inconvenient. Husband works odd hours at assorted jobs so carpooling is out of the question for him and they are at distances that make public transportation out of the question (and they don’t run late enough, in some instances.) If I’m going up to “the city” I’ll take the commuter train (BART) and take the buses when I get there, and if I’m getting groceries or going to the library, I’m close enough to walk (depending on what I need to buy and carry.)
We take a lot of road trips though, to Reno, Tahoe, Vegas…his mom lives up in Sacramento, etc. Plus, you just can’t take the bus to IKEA and drag home 3 cases of furniture, now, can you?
I did until a bizarre DUI (where I was caught W.A.L.K.I.N.G) stripped me of my license. Donated 1996 Dodge Stratus (which needed significant repairs 3+ times annually) to Salvation Army.
Now I’m biking it winter Nebraska (was -15 windchill earlier this week). I enjoy it though - it is good for me.
I buy a new car every 8 or so years and drive it until it dies, then get a new one. About every 150,000 miles. I bought an Acura Integra because of the good marks it got from consumer reports. I don’t hate it, but won’t buy another Acura. I haven’t decide if my next car will be an “old man’s” car or a green car. Have been pondering a hybrid, but have about 40,000 to go yet.
Big Old Truck: had it forever, use it to haul rocks, dirt, horse poop. Can beat the hell out it and not care.
Bigger, Newer Truck: Long cross country trips with wife, kid, trailer and livestock for sale
Small truck: Around town, work, short trips solo
Vintage Muscle car: Never drive it. Need to get rid of it.
Vintage Sports car: Never drive it. Need to drive it more. Will never get rid of it.
Aging econobox: Used to be family car before the kid came along. Developed a problem and we parked it. Need to get rid of it.
Deluxe Luxury Sedan: “New” (used to us) family Autobahn blaster. Reserved for wife/kid to use daily and for family outings/long trips without trailers/livestock. Best vehicle I’ve ever owned. Its a 97 BMW 740iL in Alpine Silver Metallic. Also used as ski vehicle for snowny days. Works better than any of the 4WD vehicles I have, owing to the traction control and anti-lock brakes.
Aging Funky Jeep: Purely a toy to thrash around in the mountains. Breaks as often as the sun rises. Leaves me stranded like clockwork. Won’t drive it farther than I am willing to walk home.
Hey, thats more than 7, and I didn’t mention the Dead Old Lady’s Car either. Got a bunch of motorcycles, too.
Starguard, we have the same car! I also have a 94 Dodge Intrepid. I love that thing. My friends and I call it “The Pimptrepid” because we all like it. Not like it’s a cool car or anything, but its fun to drive, has enough power to get me wherever I need to go, decent gas mileage, and it’s in better shape then most Intrepids of the same age I’ve seen.
I get to drive my patrol car home from work so transportation for the job is taken care of.
I drive a 94 chevy 4x4, and the little wife has a oldsmobile (thank god they don’t make them anymore), there is a 1973 corvette convertible, and a 1980 corvette tucked away in the garage for the winter. In my brother-in-law’s shop I have another old vette to restore when I can get motivated. The wife tells me every week that she wants to trade her car in for a chevy tahoe…maybe one day
I have a bright blue 2003 Ford Focus that I’ve named “Pele”
I bought it because my green 1995 Saturn SL1 aka Meridith (and in its more recent years referred to as “The Green Hornet”) was on it’s very last wheel and I was getting awfully tired of running up the credit card with monthly repairs.
One vehicle I would LOVE to have is an old 70’s Boogie Van. People back then had a lot of different names for them:
Groove Machines
Sin Bins
Motels on Wheels
Love Machines
Moon Buggies
This is somethng you just don’t see around anymore. If I can ever get the Money for it, Im gonna build me one from scratch. I already have the tinted bubble glass for the rear, now all I have to do is find a worthy van to start the conversion
**Big Old Truck: had it forever, use it to haul rocks, dirt, horse poop. Can beat the hell out it and not care.**Heh heee.
Sounds like my old truck a bit. Had it for ever, or at least High School. I graduated in '79.
It’s a '76 short bed Chevy 4x4. Perfect Plow truck. The short wheel base lets me turn tighter corners. It should require a tetness shot to get into it. As the molding and trim falls off of it, just rip it the rest of the way off and through it in the bed.
Her name is Puddles. Cause, ummm, she is not house trained.
Because it is soooo fun to drive! I bought it brand new. It had 46 miles on it when I drove it off the lot. I was so proud of myself because up until then I’d always had older model used vehicles.
I still have my 1988 Mazda B2000 pick-up, though. Gotta keep it real, man.
