London (the UK is an hour earlier, and I’m too lazy to subtract)
Tokyo (my Asian reference point)
Sydney (my “Down Under” reference point)
Those places serve as my “reference place” because I’ve spent a decent amount of time in each of them. And together, they give me a decent sense of time around the globe. I’m probably remiss in not including South Asia, but never been there.
Usually just PST/PDT where I live. But just today I added eastern time, because I’m heading out to SC on Saturday for the eclipse.
Of course the phone will show me the correct time wherever I happen to be, but I thought it would be useful to add eastern time to the World Clock tool, just for convenience sake. Saturday night when I’m sitting and waiting in the concourse at ATL for my connecting flight, my phone will tell me it’s nearly eleven. But if I then look at the World Clock tool, it’ll serve to remind me that it’s not even seven yet in California, and I can tell myself “See? You’re not as tired as you thought you were!”
I used to have more when I was in international business but now I usually only call my mother on the East Coast. During daylight savings it’s exactly 12 hours different so that doesn’t require a lookup. During the winter it’s 11 hours so that’s also no problem.
The only time I really check is UTC since typhoon tracking system are reported in that.
My home TZ. I do enough with UTC and other US TZs that I convert to/from them in my head automatically and mostly unconsciously. Don’t have any need for any others.
Back when I was doing a lot of work with folks in New Zealand I did have my PC’s taskbar clock set up to show both TZs and days of week. Sadly that gig is over and I don’t connect with those fine folks any more.
My weather app has 3 time zones, Central for Chicago, Eastern for Windsor, ON since a good friend lives, and UTC for London and Liverpool since I have friends there as well. I text my Canadian and UK friends all the time, so it’s nice to take a look at their weather. It’s nice to do the Chicago humble brag when we have great weather such as today, although I can be jealous of the milder weather during the middle of a Chicago winter.
Tokyo (My home and it’s near Tokyo Disneyland.)
Los Angeles (My hometown and it’s near Disneyland.)
Orlando (Home of Walt Disney World.)
Paris (Home of Disneyland Paris Resort.)
Hong Kong/Shanghai (Home of HK Disneyland and Shanghai Disneyland.)
Wellington. NZ reference. Where my Mum and other family live.
London. Close to where my Dad lives.
UTC. Not always the same as London and I use it regularly at work.
I should also have Brisbane. I go there regularly, it is on the east coast of Australia, but it doesn’t observe daylight saving so for the summer months Brisbane and the rest of Queensland are on a different time to the other eastern states.
Having said that, I have all of these timezones in my phone but never look at them. UTC I know, The other Australian states I know, New Zealand I know, and London is close enough to UTC to not really need it.
