OK. I guess I was getting a good deal and didn’t even know it. In my defense, I was spoiled rotten by my previous “keeper” who was my former boss who now has kennels. His family loved my dog so much that they’d just let her stay in the house with them. I’d still be using them but Gigi has developed an incontinence problem and I didn’t want her peeing on their carpet. They charged me $10/night.
We left one place where the charge was a little bit higher than normal but it was very highly rated. Problem was they charged for breakfast (Kong treats) and you had to pay extra for recreation time which of course we did so the dogs didn’t sit in their cell all day.
Five years ago we paid $40/night to board our cat. I’m pretty sure this included administering her medication, which is why we started boarding rather than our previous arrangement where someone stopped by once a day to feed her and change the litter.
They were great! She was there for her 19th birthday, and they threw her a little party (meaning catnip, cuddles and snacks).
I was thinking that $40.00/night was expensive, but that it was probably due to being at a vet, but a lot of you folks are paying that and more at regular boarding kennels.
The one we use just raised their prices last year to $26/night for our medium (by their parameters) 40lb dog. I thought it was highway robbery! I don’t know what they charge for large and small dogs.
This is in semi-rural Texas.
$60 for first dog, $50 for second dog. It’s a high end place. They have different yards depending on size/temperament/age of dog.
They also have a shallow inground concrete ‘swimming hole’ for them. And last I saw about a zillion tennis balls, and people that truly love dogs.
The place was started by a flight attendant and is close to the airport. She saw the need, and produced it.
Is the dog’s size relevant? The cat-only boarding place I’ve used charges the same for my Maine Coon as my other cat half his size: $20 a night for a cat, $30 total for 2 cats.
When we lived in Texas ten years ago, we found a company that basically “babysat” our dogs in our home: they would come out three times a day — morning to feed them and let them out for a spell, mid-day for their “business,” and evening for dinner and potty break. The person they sent would be there an hour each time, play with da mutts, watch some TV and send us video updates.
Sorry, I don’t remember the cost but if it had been expensive I would still be bitching bloody blue murder to this day, bank on it.
I would wager there are even more services of this type today; Facebook is probably a good place to begin searching.
The dogs never seemed to miss us: “Hi, pups, we’re home!” “Yeah, yeah, where’s the nice lady with the treats?”
Honestly, I don’t know. I included it in case it was. I know that my dog eats a lot less that a big dog would but they seem to just average it out.
