I just had my 20 pound dog boarded at the vet for 4 nights and paid $160 for it. That seemed a little high to me. I’m curious what others are paying.
$40 a night. Hmmm?
Maybe a little, it’s according to where you live, I suppose.
Any reason you didn’t use a dedicated kennel for boarding other than the Vet?
I’ve checked on Doggy daycare for my Dog a couple times and it’s $30 a day. He’s a bigger dog. I don’t think they go by weight other than separate quarters for smaller dogs. It was a particular question “Has he been around small animals?”
Actually seems low to me.
I’m in a rural area and don’t have a lot of options.
Seems low to me, as well, particularly if you’re paying a vet for it. Checking rates at a nearby “premium pet hotel and suites” they have a rock-bottom price of $48/night with no outdoor play. The one we taker our dog to, which has four breaks a day and a nice rug for the dog to lay on or chew up, has a base rate of $53/night.
I drive by a few places on my way to work and just looked them up. One of them is $69/night, another is $58. They give pricing according to location, with $79 for Dumbo in Brooklyn NY (a trendy area) and $45 for Houston: Dog Overnight Boarding | Hounds Town USA
One place says $32+ and it looks like the + means that the dog needs to be enrolled in their day care, which is another fee.
I don’t know what my vet would charge for boarding – I’m not even sure they offer this service. But I live rural and have a fantastic boarding facility not too far away here in the woods. They’ve been in business since 1986.
They don’t distinguish by dog or cat size. The regular rate per day for 1 dog is $31.00. Senior rate (senior owner, not the dog) is $28.00. This is for a large, dedicated, heated/air conditioned space and includes 3 “turn-outs” per day. They offer extra services such as extra play excursions, bathing or nail care for additional fees. Nothing unreasonable.
We get a deal, looks like!
We recently paid $31 at our vet’s in Southern California and $29 in Las Vegas at a kennel (chain link run), per night, including food but excluding additional walk/play time. Just an FYI for comparison.
We pay about $50/night for a farm with open sleeping* in a heated barn and all-day access to a field where they all play together (separate areas for big and small dogs). Our dog comes home happy and exhausted.
*Crates available if your dog likes solitude, otherwise there are beds and couches scattered around, and the dogs pick whatever they want.
These all seem like bargains to me. Our local places are range from $55 to $95 for one dog, discount for dog two. We instead pay someone to house and dog sit the two while we’re away and typically pay $75 a day. Expectation is two meals fours walks and/or backyard play a day.
$40 per night seems like such a low price!
My parents are flying out tomorrow for a week and checking the online rates are paying around $74 per night at a PetSmart Pet Hotel.
Our dogs take turns and go once a week to a doggy daycare for socialization. They love going! I haven’t had to board them overnight, but I’m glad if we had to, they would be going to a familiar place. Their boarding rates are $35/day for 1 dog, $60/day for 2, and $75/3 if they all share the same kennel. They have a large outdoor area for play and an indoor area for play when the weather is bad. The owners live on sight so that’s a huge plus.
My dog goes to a place for $45 per night + $41 per night for our second dog. Well worth it considering how well they treat our dogs.
My two dogs stay with a nice couple at $45 each per night.
It’s like hey they’re half of a person anyway so why not charge it like a half person motel.
In my case it is a cat, but $36/night, in Hawai’i where everything tends to be much more expensive. I was quite relieved when I heard the price, which seems pretty reasonable to me.
I think my favorite boarding place is like $40/night too, but that seems reasonable to me. They also work with my dog on behavioral training and take super good care of him, so I feel like that is more than justified. In fact, I’d probably willingly spend $50-60 a night at this place.
We have a fantastic lady that boards in her home for $15/night. We, as well as her other clients/friends, have told her that is way too low. Her husband finally convinced her to up it to $25 which we were all happy to pay.
Yeah, as a teenager I did a LOT of house/dog sitting throughout our town. I’d stop at home for dinner daily to reassure my parents I was still alive, and go to school of course, but otherwise I’d live in their houses, socialize with their pets (not always dogs, often a mix of cats/dogs, plus once six assorted birds!), plus take care of plants, bring in mail, do a daily walk through of the entire house and basement to check for broken windows or leaking pipes, all that sort of thing. I didn’t get anywhere near $75 a day, but this was fifty plus years ago.
Assuming you can find a reliable, trustworthy person to do it – you are, afterall, pretty much handing over unsupervised access to your house and everything in it – it can be a good deal and better for your pets.
One of her best friend’s young adult (college aged) kids comes over to feed & let out, mainly a walk in the backyard. $50/day for them to remain in the comfort of home.
