I’m in the midst of an “Are You Being Served” marathon, and in case you don’t know, it’s a Britcom revolving around the sales staff at Grace Brothers Dept Store.
The show revolves around two women selling ladies clothes, bras, coats etc and three men selling men’s ready wear and made to order suits.
Grace Brothers is notorious for low wages but they always say, “You’ll make it up in commission.” So I assume that is how most of the stores that sell men’s and lady’s clothing work.
So approx how much would one make selling such items? I realize it would depend at the type of store. Obviously someone working at Saks would make much more than one at Macys and so forth.
But just to get an idea.
And another question is how does the commission part work? In the TV series, the senior member always gets first choice of customers, then it goes in order of seniority.
Does this mean if the senior is serving a person who only wants a tie and someone else comes in and wants a suit, he can dump the “tie customer” on the junior and take the potential bigger commission for himself?
