I can’t remember when I had more than $30 on my person. I use the debit card for everything except bus fare. So on Mondays I have $5 or $6 in my wallet, $1 on Fridays.
I like to have at least $10 in my pocket. $40 to $50 is the most I usually carry with me, lest I lose it somehow or get mugged (not likely where I live, thank goodness).
I usually have about $50 on me. I rarely have less than $5, and would consider that a serious problem.
Maybe we can expand this question:
What’s the most cash you’ve ever carried on you?
I’ve carried a little over $5000 a couple times, when I was shopping for a used vehicle, and once more than $8000, when I sold a used vehicle.
I took $150,000 in cash from the Princes’ Gates at the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto, across the property to the bank on the premises. Boy, all the thoughts that flash through your mind in such a situation, and none of them are workable.
The most cash - $25,000 in Atlantic City. There were a few other instances in AC with high dollar amounts that I can remember - $10K, $5K, $2-3K was average.
And going out is a different story. If I know I’m going out, I will usually have anywhere from $60 - $100 cash on me, or more depending on where I’m going, what I’m doing, etc. And if where I’m going is a tittie bar, then it’s in singles.
He carries around $1500?! Holy shit!
I’m another go to the ATM when I need it and use it till it runs out person, although I rarely withdraw more than $30. And even then, it makes me uncomfortable to have so much money on me, so I keep most of it at home. I spend cash way faster than debit money, since I can’t justify using debit to pay for any less than $5 worth of goods, I feel like I’m wasting the clerk’s time. So there’s a whole lot of things I just can’t buy if I don’t have cash, and that helps me save money. Right now I have seven dollars and a whole mess of change in my purse.
Ack, didn’t see the corollary when I posted. The most I’ve ever had on me was a little over $400, that was my graduation money from various non-bank-trusting relatives. I carried it around for maybe a half hour before taking it to the bank and putting it in my account. No high roller me.
I’m another one who pretty much doesn’t carry much cash, for the same ‘it keeps me from frittering it away’ reason.
A side benefit: it gives you an iron-clad excuse for not lending money to the office mooches AND gives you an escape from having to buy some of whatever fundraising junk people are selling in their kid’s place.
Heck, you stick to not carrying any cash for a while, and your co-workers stop even asking you for money.
The only exception is when I’m heading off to a fleamarket or another such ‘cash only’ venue.
I haven’t carried cash on me in probably over six months. I have an out-of-state bank with direct deposit, so no ATM card. Everything (and I mean pretty much everything) around here accepts credit cards, and if I know I might need cash sometime, I’ll just bum a couple bucks off the wife.
Usually zero dollars during the week, and I pull out cash if I am going to a casino on the weekend. Otherwise, everything is paid on the debit card. Easier that way.
I found out when I have cash on me, I tend to spend it. If I only use the debit card, I only buy what I need and don’t feel that hole burning in my pocket.
The past few years I’ll withdraw 200 dollars from the ATM at a time. Enough to be useful, not so much that I’d die if it were lost. Actually my wallet and purse I care about more than anything in them.
I don’t know if I’ve ever carried more than a few hundred dollars at a time. Checks and cards have always taken care of the big money stuff.
I usually have about forty bucks. I use my AmEx wherever I can, and debit for the rest.
In re-reading this thread, it looks like the worst place to ask for donations, or to be a mugger, would be at a DopeFest.
Unless I’m broke, between $100-$350 bucks. Occasionally, when I’m stupid and don’t empty out my billfold at home or the bank, as much as $600-$700.
I bartend, which means that
a.) I get paid in cash, and
b.) I pay for almost everything with cash.
I deposit enough cash in my checking account to pay my bills (most of which I pay online) and that’s really the only time I use any kind of plastic.
If I have less than $50 bucks in my wallet I get really nervous, b/c that generally means I’m pretty damn broke.
I withdraw my $300 limit each ATM trip, just seems more efficient than going over and over. I never use my debit card, but put all non-cash purchases on my credit card so I can up my reward points.
When I get down to maybe thirty bucks, I stop at the ATM again.
I’m not comfortable carrying more than about $40 on a regular basis, but I like to have at least ten or so for small things. I don’t usually use cash for anything that’s over about $20. That’s what my lovely debit card is for.
I’d generally have a couple of hundred Euros in my wallet. My father always told me that you never know what’s going to happen.
Better looking at it than for it
I start with $40 on the weekend, and it lasts me through the week. All of my normal expenses except beer, soft drinks, and snacks go on plastic, so I don’t need a lot of cash.
$750, when I was going to get my car back from a body shop that wouldn’t take credit cards. I was quite nervous about it- I can’t imagine regularly carrying that much cash.
I don’t get to the bank that often, so I’m usually walking around with my tip money adding up in my wallet for a few days. I often don’t notice how much it’s adding up… yesterday, for instance, I decided it was time to put some money in the bank and, after counting, realised I’d been carrying around over $300 in my wallet for at least three days! Not the safest thing for a small-ish girl in her early twenties who works late at night to be doing.
I used to be an all-debit card person, now I rarely if ever pull out the debit card. I can’t stand the fees.
